Questionable RPI/Tufts?

I am a junior at a public high school south of Boston. I have a 3.7 GPA. I'm shooting for a 710 in each SAT category and I don't see any reason I will miss (I've been studying hard for months!). I take all the hardest classes my school has to offer (I will graduate with five APs). I have multiple leadership positions in my marching band, concert band, and jazz band. I have participated in SEMSBA and the Bridgewater State Honor Band. In addition, I am a member of the National Honor Society. I can write a pretty killer essay. Basically, my top schools are Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Tufts University. My physics teacher who did his doctoral work at Tufts will write me a recommendation, as well as my English teacher who is nationally recognized as a poet. I have yet to take SAT II's, but I will be taking the Math II and Literature tests soon. I am planning on majoring in physics (possibly a minor in math?) and I am interested in pursuing astrophysics and cosmology in my graduate studies. What are my chances that I will be admitted to these two schools?

Thank you very much.

bump? anyone?

Assuming you can get those hoped-for scores, I’d say both schools are definately within reach. Tufts may be slightly more of a reach…but a letter of rec from a PhD alum will definately help. Are any of your APs in Physics? If not, maybe consider taking the SAT2 in Physics to “grease the wheel”, but besides that I’d say you’ve got a better than good shot!

BTW…I read your post too quickly and thought you were considering grad work in astrophysics and cosmotology…I was thinking…hmmm…that’s an interesting combo! lol

Yes, I am taking honors physics this year and will take AP physics my senior year with AP Calculus (and a couple more non-stems as GPA boosters). And actually, I had it wrong, he got his PhD from Tufts and he was a professor for a while. Thanks for your reply!
