Questions about ASU, need help

I’m looking for more infos about ASU. Looking for a school and considering ASU as one of them.

I’d like to know more about things like:

 1. Classes. Is it easy to register for classes or they just get filled up too early? How are the profs, good teachers, available for students or not? Do we get insane workloads (homeworks), I prefer classes that challenge in quality, not quantity. Are the admins helpful or just available when we write the check?
 2. Are the dorms any good on your campus or they simply suck? If apartment is a better choice is it easy to find a decent one? Also please suggest a dorm if you can. Any dorm that isnt run-down, or way too quiet.
 3. What about the surrounding town. are the residents friendly? Or whether its safe or not over there. One more thing, any decent access to supermarkets, diners, movies, etc?
 4. Its campus life. Are the students friendly towards foreigners and one another? What about social scenes, do they party all the time or never party at all? Not a party animal, but prefer places with social life.
 5. Anything more, unsual, or any concerns I should know about?

One more thing, is it true that ASU has better engineering and acrhitecture programs than U Arizona? And is it really that hot in there? I’m an international student from a tropical country where its pretty much between 75-90F all year long.

If you’re willing to tell me more, feel free to respond. Any infos appreciated.

I've never had a problem getting into a class that I wanted. Just don't wait till the last minute to pick your classes because there won't be much left to choose from. I've rarely had a professor who didn't want to help a student. As long as you put in the effort, then there is no reason to fail out of a class. As for homework, I had a harder workload in high school and I am taking upper level classes.

As for dorms, it really just depends on what dorm. Generally, the newer, the better. Just stay away from Manzanita.... pretty much everyone will tell you that. As for the good ones, I would consider Hassayampa, San Pablo, or any of the Honors dorms (if you are in the honors college).

I've never really had a problem being out and about in the surrounding area. The area surrounding ASU is really a college town type of atmosphere. Just use common sense and it shouldn't be a problem. There is a grocery store that is just down the street. If you don't have a car, its maybe 2-3 minutes by bus (and all students are eligible for free bus pass). There are plenty of food type places around campus.

I've never heard of any major problems between students (foreign or not). Since the school is so large, the social scene is what you make of it. There are students who party all the time and there are those who never party at all.

I know that the architecture program at ASU is better than UA... not really sure about engineering though.

It can get pretty hot here.... over 110 in the summer, but during the school year, it usually starts and ends somewhere between 100 and 110. But once the temperatures drop, it gets really nice outside.... pretty much 65-85.

Thanks smart&blonde.
That sounds pretty good, as I used to go to Washington State U (WSU), which is a very nice place w/ friendly people. But the remote location (PUllman) and the way the school organize their departments really suck. And despite the staff's big mouth many programs arent as good as they want you to believe. Believe it or not some professors recommend me to go to ASU if I choose architecture, cuz they have better programs there.

Whats wrong w/ Manzanita? Everybody seems to suggest me to stay off, but noone ever said why...

Phoenix - News - Dorm Warning

posted 7 years ago and everyone still says its the same. lol, Hassayampa is very nice...

Recent visitors to the ASU Honors College dorms stated that the dorm was enclosed by a barbed wire fence. Is this accurate?

Barbed wire?????? Confirmation, please?

Hamadeh, thx for the link. Btw does this happen in Manzy only? Or pretty much most of the dorms?

Anyone else?

I don't think there is barbed wire.... but I'm not on that side of campus very much. I'm pretty sure there is a fence in some parts though.

Manzy is the craziest of the dorms. I haven't been in all the dorms, but I rarely ever hear stories from the others. It's always Manzy.

The honors college is most definitely not enclosed by a barbed wire fence. It's just a normal fence between the buildings so that random people cannot wander into the courtyard.

Thats a relief. Back in my campus they actually put wire fence on some of the campus owned apartments, not sure why but it's known as the center or lawless parties in town, so it might have something to do with it.

So since I have no plans in attending the honors, Hassayampa and San Pablo are the recommended ones then. Is it easy, or even possible to get a single room there???

There are no single rooms in San Pablo... I don't know about Hassayampa.

There arent any single rooms in Hassayampa, in fact i think the only dorm with single rooms beside Manzanita is Ocotillo. Its again a bit of an older dorm and by far the smallest dorm as there are probably only 200ish students. I have been in one of their single rooms and they are a bit cramped but overall not too bad. You do share a bathroom with someone but you each have your own sink in your side of the room. I think it would be really nice especially if youre an upperclassman. I mean, Hassayampa is ALL freshman and I wouldnt suggest living there after your first year.

Well, I dont mind sharing bathroom and kitchen, you know, that kinda stuff. I just prefer a single, a decently sized one that is... It's a much needed private space for me.

What about Cholla?

One more thing.
I asked around about Manzy and end up getting crazy descriptions, like why is it called "14 floors of whores"? I've heard it more than once.

Another gave me a list of "survival kits must- haves":
duct tape (?)
earplugs
ipod or mp3player
fan or better yet: air con
and condom (??????)

What do you guys think of these infos? Relevant??

I really don't have too much info on Cholla, but I know its mostly upper classmen. I would definitely suggest living in one of the more freshman dorms your first year, so that you get the "experience." haha. Manzy does have a bad rep, but I know some people who live there and don't mind it. But it is a very loud dorm as opposed to others so you would definitely have to get use to that.

Wow that some pretty interesting info you got. But truthfully it really depends where you live, who's your roommate is and what you are going to do in free time. Whether its going to parties every night, you know etc. Uh and that condom recommendation is self explanatory. But its up to you really. I'm not sure about the duct tape but im living in a newer dorm, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Ipods are definitely nice when walking to and from class, also maybe listening to it in your dorm as to not disturb your roommate(I just listen to music on my computer). But all of that stuff you mentioned are things that can easily be bought after you move in and get used to being here.

Most older dorms you will probably need a fan, but I live in Hassayampa and you definitely don't need one. The a/c works awesome and it can get pretty cold in the rooms.

damadcow, you're sounding pretty picky about this dorm/class stuff. Let loose! You're going to college!

I didn't think I would enjoy having a roommate, but I didn't really worry about it too much, and it turned out great!! We are really great friends and are living together again next year. You could potentially make a life-long friend, and it's definitely a good thing to have someone to talk to, meet other people through, help you out...

Stop worrying so much and embrace the college experience!

lol I am a college student, or was, used to go to WSU but had to leave school due to past financial hardships. That's why I know exactly that I want a single. My room back there always turned into the hangout room (dubbed "the hill's chill center") even though its a single. The great thing is I can actually have a personal space of my own when I need one.

Not sure about roomates. I had one, and it turned into hell. Switched to single and still had tons of new friends. Having a private space can be crucial if you live about 12000 miles from home.

Oh, nevermind then. Sorry about the assumptions.

If you're looking for a single, you should probably go for ocotillo. It's nice. A few people on my floor in Best don't have roommates, so I bet if you talked to someone in the college, they can help you out.

lol dont worry about it.

I'v e heard a little about Ocotillo. A bit old but not run down, a bit loud but not manzy loud. Sounds pretty good to me....

i know a few people in ocotillo and have been there quite a few times, in both the double rooms and single rooms. both are pretty nice with a good amount of room. yes the dorm might be a bit older but if youre looking for a single its your best bet i think.
