Questions about Brown from an International

Hey, I’m a foreign student and I like what I’ve heard about Brown so far so I’ll probably be applying this year :)

But anyway I still have some queries about Brown:

1) Is Brown considered strong in Economics? And whats econ like there? Is it very math intensive? I prefer the less math-y part of econ. haha. How recognised is a degree from brown internationally? I’m especially concerned that many employers only know of the big names like HYP.

2) Exactly how tough is financial aid for internationals? Anyone has any figures? I know they’re increasing the aid, but about how many foreigners get aid in every new class?

3) Is there strong school spirit? I mean, being a campus in the middle of a city, does a lot of the activity happen on campus or in the city?

would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out with these. thanks in advance!

I'm not a student, so I can answer only one thing: yes, Brown is well-known internationally, and you can't beat the Ivy tag within the US. And as far as I know, I've heard good things about Brown econ.

Brown econ has paths which are less math intensive and won't require more than a semester of calculus.

We are not need-blind for internationals, so it can be difficult to both get into Brown if aid is necessary, and unlikely that you'll get the aid you truly require if you do get in.

Brown students love Brown.

Brown students love Brown.

Do they love the school or the color?
LOL.

financial aid is pretty tough to get for internationals. and its obvious that they do gravitate towards international students who don't need financial aid. for the students from my country in my year, they accepted 40 applicants out of 120 applications, and i do know that about 90% of those accepted didn't request for financial aid. i think our tiny country is overrepresented because very few of us request for financial aid. there are of course plenty brilliant international students on financial aid, but you'll realize that there are only a few per country.

we kind of live in our own little bubble in providence. i dont think we integrate much with the city. but that being said its a pretty awesome bubble. and i wouldnt really call providence a city, just saying that cos im an international student at brown and i have higher expectations of what a city should be like, so you might be disappointed with providence.
