Questions about cadet life (PART 2)

Good question, this is one example of teamwork that you'll figure out pretty quick once you get here. Whispering won't work if the person asking is standing right there, so the best thing you could do in that situation is just start shouting out the answer. Most likely your classmates will follow along, and the worst the upperclassmen could do is tell you to shut up.

hey bostonguy, what part of boston are you from?

What percent of cadets do you think are in a relationship? Are most cadets so goal-orientated that they find relationships immpractical?

what's recognition?

and this may sound pansy, but i need to ask:

how are the beds? and can you sleep with more than 1 pillow? and can you use your own blanketS?

Recognition is when freshmen are recognized into the wing. This means we get our Prop and Wings, get privileges back, and basically are treated like normal people again. It's a few days of almost non-stop training, but since I haven't been through it yet, I'm not the best person to tell you about it.

And about the beds...they're comfortable enough. I barely slept on mine during basic (had to keep it looking perfect), but I just remake it in the morning now. You can sleep with as many pillows as you want, but as a freshman you have to stick to issued bedding, meaning no personal blankets. Have I seen this rule broken? Of course. But according to regs you're not technically supposed to.

Things like an electric toothbrush or shaver, IF they are allowed, is it best to leave them behind until after basic? What about my beloved Ti-89?

Bring your beloved TI-89. You'll need it. That is as long as TI-89s are allowed.

"Hey I was just wondering if the Academy had a Ski team and if there is any recruiting or what it would take to be able to be on it... Also, how is the Academy's boxing and wreslting teams? Is anyone on them?"

There is a ski team, you have to try out for it. They don't recruit.

There is also boxing and wrestling here, I am in boxing. They don't/can't recruit, the boxing league doesn't allow it because they don't want ex-Olympian boxers with 200 fights coming in here in wrecking shop.

You'll have to do a class in boxing or wrestling sometime your 4 degree year, it's your choice.

I heard that USNA issue calculators. Does USAFA issue them too? Are TI-89s allowed?

Shines-are you an IC or are you taking boxing as your PE class for the semester?

Solormax2000-I know they issue calculators and I'm pretty sure you are required to use what you are issued in class and not your own.

But you may need a calculator you are familiar with for the placement exams.

They issue simple calculators (the TI-30XIIS). We call them honorlators and they are the only calculators allowed on almost all exams (at least freshmen year) until you get to calculus 3. In Clac 3 you can not only use any calculator you want, but also matlab on your computer. Matlab isn't as useful as Mathematica (no exact answers), but it comes in handy. Bring your TI-89, I use mine all the time for homework. It's much quicker for me than the honorlator and it helps me check my answers so I know I'm not making mistakes.

How are math homework graded and how much do they weigh? Are they graded for accuracy?

We were not allowed to use 89s (or any C.A.S. based computer/calculator) in Calc II or now in calc III. Its a pain because coming from the calc BC AP exam, we were so dependant on our calculators...

Anyone know if you can use TI-89s on the placement exams?

OK, I have a friend that visited the MMA last weekend. I don't know how the academics compare but this is what he said. He is in Calculus AB at my school, its ok in it, but not anything special. He said he watched the two cadets he stay with struggle with 3 problems for 10 min. He finally felt bad and helped them out. He said the problems were easier than what he had to do here. I don't know if the cadets just weren't too good at math, or what, but is this a theme at the other academies at all?

Please, folks, let's not compare USAFA and USMMA academically... it's like comparing an F-22 and a Carnival cruise ship--for guaranteeing air superiority.

lol, ok then, thanks doc.

"We were not allowed to use 89s (or any C.A.S. based computer/calculator) in Calc II or now in calc III."

You CAN use Ti-89s and Matlab in Calculus III (I'm in it now.)

"How are math homework graded and how much do they weigh? Are they graded for accuracy?"

Regular homework problems are specified and reccomended, but not graded or even handed in. You'll have the freedom to do only as many problems as you need to to learn the material. Hopefully, you'll have the disicpline to do at least that many. I don't! I usually have to do a lot of catch up come GR time. At the academy, like many colleges, you are not spoon fed like in high school (you'll hear this from instructors over and over). Just doing required homework is not always enough to get you through.

Hey hey hey. Ya'll watch it about USMMA! You so hurt my feelings! Wanted to share something I got emailed today. You guys really are awesome & the kid that wrote the following is top shelf in my book.
