Questions about Course Schedules

Looking at the course schedules for Summer B and Fall, I have a couple questions.

1) What are the sections marked DEPT reserved for? They say you have to schedule those through the dept. Many times it looks like these meet for two consecutive periods instead of one period a day. Or they say 5 days a week versus 3 days for other sections. An example is MAC 1140 in the Fall, the DEPT one is Mon through Fri, and the other sections are only Mon, Wed, Thurs.

2) For Fall BSC 2010 for example, one section meets Mon, Wed, and Fri for one period, and the rest meet 4 days a week for one period. They are all the same 3 hours class.

I have noticed some sections of the same class number meet more often than others. Is this common and why do they do that?

Thanks!

Can someone answer these ?s?

DEPT can be a mix of things. It could that you have to go to that dept to get permission to take the course. It could be a special course, like there is a gen chem section for engineering majors. Maybe a small class, so they restrict enrollment. Or it doesn't mean anything. 1140 should be 3 days, the DEPT (M-F) could be a placeholder class, so they can expand if enroll increases.

2010 should be 3 days a wk. 4 days seems like an error unless they restructured the class since I took it. 2011 is also meeting 4 days/wk, so maybe there was a change or just computer error.

I just called advising and they said that it's true that some classes can meet more often than others for the same credit.

How do you find which courses to take? Is there a catalog? My daughter's major is pre-med. Thanks

Actually, pre-med is not a major. They can pick any major but need to make sure they take all the right prerequisites for application to med school. Many people are Biology majors, but they really don't even need to be Science.

This link will get you started.
Office of the University Registrar

They will get advising from Pre-Health advising who will make sure they take the correct critical tracking classes.

Once you have the curriculum, go to the Course Listings link here to see the schedules.
