I am a sophomore. I switched my major from Computer Science to Applied Math few days ago. I want to double minor in business and music too. Is it possible? I heard that dornsife students had to take at least 96 units of classes that were offered by DORNSIFE. Is it true? If so, does it mean that I CANNOT do double-minor in Marshall and Thornton since I won't have enough units to fulfill the requirements?

Since you are on campus try contacting one of the Dornsife counselors and checking on the school’s unit requirements. I assume you moved from Viterbi. I know Dornsife students do minor in subjects outside of the school, so you should check on the possibilities.

I’m bumping this. Shinywing, did you find anything? If not, I’ll email my advisor.

I still can’t find anything yet victoriaheidi :(

To earn a degree in Dornsife, students must complete at least 104 units in Dornsife. This requirement is reduced (as you have already discovered) to 96 units for students with a second major or minor(s) in schools at USC other than Dornsife. Any AP credits you were granted at admission count toward the 96-unit total (please look at your STARS report on OASIS to see a current total of how many units you currently have in “The College.” It is under the section entitled “The College Basic Requirement,” and in this case “The College” refers to Dornsife). Your tuition covers up to 18 units per semester, so over the course of 8 semesters (four years) that is 144 units. 144-96=48 units you can take outside of Dornsife without paying for extra units. Most minors range from 20 to 24 units, so it is possible to fit them in, and many students do.
In addition, the academic achievement award is available for students pursuing double majors and major/minor combos that allows them to take up to 20 units per semester without extra charge. This award is only available to students with a GPA of at least 3.75.
Some of your degree requirements can be taken at community college over the summers, though those classes will not count toward your Dornsife total - they are just a way of satisfying requirements at a lower cost and getting the units/classes you need for you major(s), minor(s) and general education requirements. Those classes must be pre-approved - the pre-approval form is on OASIS.

Make an appointment with your major advisor and advisors from each of the schools where you would like to minor - use the many, many resources available to you at USC to get the answers you need.

Good luck!

Thanks alamemom. Friendly advice for anyone who may want to switch into Dornsife after starting in another school: make your electives Dornsife electives! I should have been in Dornsife electives, but I didn’t know about the unit requirement until I began to consider switching majors.

Excellent advice! Remember that your AP credits count as Dornsife units - how many units did you get through AP? It probably won’t show up that way on OASIS until your major is actually changed (if you haven’t officially changed it yet).

I just looked into this-Dornsife counts a max of 16 AP units as Dornsife units, so 16 units already heading towards Dornsife units, with 8 more from this semester (again, being outside of Dornsife means I have former major credit now counting as “elective” credit-bummer!), for a grand total of 24. This means that I’m currently expected to complete 80 more Dornsife units, but that’ll go down to 72 with my minor.

Sadly, that still probably means that a second minor outside of Dornsife is not an option, and that I will only get to take a few non-Dornsife electives outside of that. Nonetheless, I’m going to meet with some advisors to see if I can make this happen.

Dornsife counts up to 32 AP units as being in The College - or are you just talking about your particular case? http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/apexamcredit.html

Aren’t you a first-semester freshman? Seven more semesters at 18 units each = 126 units. If 72 of them must be Dornsife, then 54 can be outside The College. With careful planning, that is plenty for a minor - most minors are 20 to 24 units.

According to my STARS report (and actually, to that link you sent me), USC will count 32 units of credit from APs/pre-college university classes/all that. But not all 32 units count as Dornsife units. Only 16 count as Dornsife units.

I am a first-semester freshman; unfortunately, if I take 18 units/semester through Fall 2014, I will max out on units because of my advance standing units. I calculated 18 units/semester with both of the minors I want, but the way it works, my only Dornsife classes wind up being my GEs and my Dornsife major. This is all so confusing!

I will meet with advisors before declaring either minor. Either way, I think I’m probably going to have to pick between the two, but whatever. I’ll work it all out somehow. :)

My daughter received 32 Dornsife units for her AP courses. They must be 4s and 5s to receive credit. Maybe it changed in 2009 when they made adjustments to the AP credit policy - can you tell me where in the link it says the part about 16 units so I know where to go to give the correct info?

“Max out on units???” What “max” on units? There is a max of 144 attempted units for SAP for financial aid, but AP units are not a part of that total, so you would remain under that. 7 X 18 = 126 plus whatever you took this semester, which is still 144 or less.

Again to use my daughter as an example, she has a Dornsife major and Cinema minor and entered with 32 AP units (all given Dornsife designation), was a junior by her 2nd semester, a senior by her second year, is now in her 4th year (5th semester with a “senior” designation) and still receiving her scholarships and financial aid and will graduate with a total of 162 units, including 32 AP units, 15 study abroad (which also count as Dornsife units) and the rest earned in residence at USC.

Stop throwing roadblocks in your own way and look at this as something you CAN do! USC strongly encourages all students to take a minor, so they are not in the business of making it impossible. Walk into your counseling appointment with the attitude of finding a way it WILL work rather than looking for reasons not to do it :)

*And if it turns out that policies have changed (my kiddo entered in 2008, and there were some AP policy changes in 2009), PLEASE come back and update the thread for others - put in links so I have something to show the kids looking for info - thanks!

GOOD LUCK!
