Hi,

I'm planning to transfer to UCLA's mathematics/economics major (UCSD's similar program is my backup) for Fall 2011. I feel I have excellent chances if I keep up my progress (high GPA, honors courses, TAG/TAP, ECs, full-time employment, etc.).

In any case, as is typical of most California community colleges, the only economics courses, and exposure to the subject in general, comes from introductory courses in micro/macro econ. Naturally, these courses are catered to, let's just say less inclined students, and thus are a completely non-rigorous/mathematical approach to the subject (it also didn't help that the department only used adjunct [professional part time instructors] professors that were absolutely horrible at teaching - I received A's in both with minimal effort while many other students flunked left and right). I'm not trying to sound like an arrogant ass or anything, I don't really consider myself brilliant in economics or anything, but for anyone who has taken these two classes at a CCC, I'm sure you know where I'm coming from!

I'm concerned that once I arrive to UCLA (or whichever university) that jumping into courses like econometrics will be overwhelming; especially since these courses at CCC are suppose to satisfy the university's prerequisites, and obviously they do almost nothing in that respect.

Has anyone been in this situation before that can share their experiences? I honestly feel like I got absolutely nothing out of those courses except a survey of economics - in fact, I've probably learned more from application problems in my calculus classes than I did in the economics courses themselves!

Thanks!

I also wanted to know if it's possible to switch majors after transferring to UCLA and designating your major? For example, if I end up hating economics, is switching to engineering or physics an option? I realize the prerequisites would need to be satisfied first, which mean more time/$ at UCLA, but are they options? Or will UCLA refuse to allow you to switch from a major in one school (CL&S) to another (Engineering)?
