Questions about FASFA

I was just accepted for the Summer 2014 and I was told since I will be doing summer I can fill out the FASFA right now. Is this true?

If the school counts summer as part of the preceding year, summer 2014 would be part of the 2013-2014 school year so you would complete the current FAFSA for the summer then the one that comes available in January for the fall.

Some schools count summer as the preceding year and some as part of the following year, so it depends on the school. Check with them.

If next summer (2014) is part of THIS academic year (2013-2014), then yes, you can complete the 2013-2014 FAFSA now.

If summer 2014 is part of the 2014-2015 school year, you would need to wait until January 2014 to complete the 2014-2015 FAFSA.

Just call the school to be certain that summer 2014 is part of their 2013-2014 financial aid year. If yes…then yes…that FAFSA is available now.

By whom? Financial aid office?

By another forum member, but to be sure I am just going to call the financial aid office.

Celeste…call your college. Find out which academic year summer 2014 goes with at YOUR college. That will tell you which FAFSA to submit.

Yes, do check with your school. This is not an one answer fits all situation but will depend on whether the school treats summer as header (part of following year) or a trailer (I think that’s the term - part of the preceding year).

If the school treats summer as a header, be aware that any aid you get in the summer will come out of the regular year’s aid and may reduce what you get during the regular semesters.

If it treats summer as a trailer, it should not affect the the regular year’s aid, though will of course go toward any aggregate maximums so you will have to be aware of that toward the end of your schooling.
