Questions about Mizzou

I'm thinking about applying to Mizzou as a transfer student (one year of community college, with a 3.4-3.6 GPA), and have had some questions about the school and the surroundings. I would be planning on entering in either Spring or Fall '12, and I'm probably going to be majoring with something to do with animals and/or the enviroment (I'm still kind of undecided though).

I'm probably going to be living in off-campus housing, since I don't think that they allow cats. I will be bringing to my cat with me (not an option to leave him, since we are really attached to each other, andmy mom wouldn't take care of him/not an animal person). Are they any safe, quiet places to choose to live for off campus?

How do the students from Stephens Women's College and Mizzou get along? I've heard from some they get along, and from others they don't.

Any advice you can give me if I do get accepted into Mizzou? Or is there anything I should get prepared to do, or other events I need/should go to before the classes start?

For the application process, do they want an essay or interview? If they want an interview is there anything I should know, or be prepared for?

My mother and I are thinking about visiting, but we were wondering how much extra money we would need to bring with us? Mostly for hotel costs, or any kind of activities, food, etc that we would have to pay for when we go?

How exactly does getting scholarships work?

Um, I also wanted to know if there were any dangerous bugs around the area? Are they found around/in/near the school/class/dorms? I do have a fear of insects, and would like to know.

Is there a list or something of what to bring, and what not to bring to Mizzou/dorms?

I'm not into/don't like partying, and drinking, but are there other ways to meet/get to know people?

Is the college and surrounding area safe?

What exactly is Honor's College? Is it harder, or any different from the regular programs?

Even though I probably won't be in the dorms, if I was going to live there, are there any dorms that are I should avoid, or are better than another. I'm quiet, kind of shy/loner, and introverted, so anything information would be helpful; I'm not really a social person, I mostly like to keep to myself and get my work done.

I apologize for the amount of questions, I just want to make sure and learn about things before I really decide.

It’s a good idea to spend some time reading the Mizzou admissions and financial aid websites carefully. You’ll find answers to some of your questions there. The staff is very helpful, too–quick to respond to phone or email inquiries. A visit will help you get a feel for the place.

You could probably find off-campus housing that accepts pets, but be prepared to leave a bigger deposit. You can’t have a cat in a dorm. Many–maybe most–upperclass students live off campus. Some apartment complexes have one-bedroom units, but you’ll pay more than you would with roommates. A car is recommended. My son tried off-campus living without a car, but the bus can be frustrating–not the big-city transit system he was used to!

Thanks, though I did read them, I probably overlooked some things, so I’ll check again. Most of the questions, I had asked even though I read the websites, I asked because I was looking for a student’s (parent’s, or just somebody who knew/knows of somebody who went there) personal opinion on certain stuff. Since, I know sometimes that schools will tell you something that doesn’t exactly reflect what is going on, like I’m not sure if the school would really tell me some things that might not make their school look good (not that they would, but some colleges I’ve talked to have done that) about the bugs, whether or not the Stephens women college students get along with their school, etc.

Thank you very much, that helps, I’ve never actually been comfortable on buses, so I’d probably have to bring my car.

Actually some students have “secret” cats in the apartments; I know that for sure

Also it’s not very convenient to drive a car to the campus because of hard to find / far away parking; it’s much easier to take a free shuttle. My daughter’s roommate has a car; but they take it to classes only in case if one of them can drop and pick another up :-)

This is just weird. There is another thread on the Mizzou page where a female student from California, MusicalGabi, asks the same two questions. Really?
