Questions about Mizzou

I'm most likely going to be attending Mizzou next year, but I still have a couple questions.

I absolutely love colleges with deep tradition and overwhelming school spirit. How does Mizzou compare to other schools based on those 2 factors?

Greek life is definitely something I want to be involved in. Does Mizzou have a good Greek system? How impressive are the events such as parties?

If you had to compare it to another school in the midwest, what would it be?

Thanks.

Someone help me out here.

Parent of recent graduate and spouse of alum here. Tradition and school spirit are powerful at Mizzou. Sports are big, of course, and the spirit goes beyond that. It’s hard to describe, but it gives a feeling of community to a large university. Unfortunately, I can’t answer your other two questions. My S and his friends weren’t involved in the Greek system, but that certainly didn’t affect their social life! Good luck to you.

Thank you very much!

Anyone else able to answer the other two questions?

Daughter is currently a junior at Mizzou and loves it there. School spirit is huge and you always see students wearing their Mizzou gear. She is in a sorority and Greek life appears to be very active. They have many events throughout the year, the 2 biggest being homecoming and Greekweek. Homecoming at Mizzou is huge. The Greek community decorate Greektown, they have a blood drive and more. They are also involved in philanthropy and each chapter will raise money for their particular organization. I don’t know which other school it compares to but it is a wonderful school and I know my daughter could not see herself anywhere else

Thank you for your input! I’m very excited for next year.

Anyone else?

More responses are appreciated!

I don’t know where you’re from, but I’m a high school senior living just a few hours west of Columbia. I applied and am also considering attending. A lot of my older friends have gone to Mizzou and, from what I’ve seen, most people go to Mizzou with an overwhelming amount of school spirit. It’s pretty much the college sports capital of Missouri, so that’s not so surprising. I visited the campus and greek life sounded like it was a pretty huge thing. I can’t remember the exact numbers, but there were A LOT of fraternities and sororities established. As for the last bit of question 2, I’ve never personally been, but Mizzou has a reputation in Missouri for having students who know how to party. Finally, I hate to say it (being a Missourian and all,) but MU is probably pretty comparable to KU.

Also, as for tradition, homecoming is a big deal at Mizzou because the idea was actually invented at Mizzou (according to the people I talked to.)

Hi! My son will be going to Mizzou in the fall of 2014 to study broadcast journalism. It is his dream school! He was admitted to other great journalism schools, but Mizzou is definitely where he wants to be. He visited the school this week and loved everything about it. It offers the perfect college experience, the campus is beautiful, and the J-school the best in the country. A couple of his friends from high school in Texas are in Mizzou now and having a great experience. They totally recommend the school. What will your major be, Sixen711?

Check into facebook and twitter sites - my daughter incoming freshman has been following them and already feels a part of the school and excited to experience it next year in person. She never expected to go Greek but a high school friend (soph at Mizzou) is in a sorority and DD wants to look into the possibility.
