I am currently attending a cc in california. I am planning on applying to San Jose state next fall. I have the golden four finished and my GE's as well. I was wondering how the "declare your major" process works at SJSU. Do you get to choose a main one and a backup? Also, for example if I apply this october for fall 2013 admission how soon will I find out if I did or did not get accepted.

I believe you choose only one major, and then you have to stick with it throughout the application process. I don’t recall being given the option of applying to two majors when I applied. However, I applied for transfer in 2009, so the rules may have changed – but the rules seem to be getting tighter, not looser.

You’ll most likely be notified of acceptance around March.

Here’s some more information: http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-1027.html

Good luck!

I haven’t applied as transfer to SJSU, but I do plan to in the near future. Everything I’ve researched so far goes along the lines of applying under a single major (not even a minor declared) since the entire SJSU campus is impacted. I have heard of individuals applying and being accepted under their stated transfer major, and I have heard of individuals applying and being accepted as undeclared no matter their major and subsequently received another letter telling them they were accepted into their major program. This may have something to do with lower-div majors however (SJSU would deem all lower-div transfers as undeclared until their jr/sr year when they applied into the program, again because of impaction), however, SJSU does not accept any lower-div transfers now. I think transfers hear relatively quick about their decision especially if your app is straightforward and you’re in the service area.
