Questions about summer admissions

I read in the decisions thread from last year that some borderline people were accepted for the summer school session. How does that exactly work? My parents seemed to think you had to take a few classes and maintain a X GPA to gain official admission. Is this true, and if not are their any stipulations put on summer students as far as gaining admission full time? Thanks a lot!

As I understand it, starting in summer is not a “conditional” admission, it just means you start in the summer. See this link for more about summer admissions. [Summer Session - University Park](http://www.psu.edu/summersession/more_about.htm)

Starting in the summer just puts you in a different group as far as applicants go. So your application is compared to the other students applying for summer session. The process as I understand it, is not designed for “easier admission” but that’s kinda the way it plays out. The are far fewer people applying to summer session, so in an effort to fill slots, they end up taking people who are borderline for the more competitive fall admission.

Does anyone know the approximate cost of attending the Summer seeion in advance of Freshman year, assuming you choose that option?

That’s just housing/food plan (if you are in university housing, you must have a university meal plan). Tuition is the same as any other semester, per credit; summer students usually take 6 (esp. LEAP freshmen)

I have been living in PA since August 15th, 2011. According to the information posted on Penn State’s official website, one has to have lived in the state for at least 12 months to be eligible for in-state tuition.

My dilemma is whether I should mark off the summer option to increase my chances of being admitted and whether I will still be eligible for in-state tuition if I do that? (when does the summer session start?)

Thank you!!

The first summer sessions begins May 12; final exams for the second session end August 10.

You will not be considered a resident during summer session.

What about Fall 2012? Activation period is August 13 - September 10, but the new students begin arriving on the 24th of August. Do you know which one is considered?

I would check with the Bursar’s Office to be sure–

I just e-mailed them.

I appreciate your help.

Just the clarify, is it customary for a student to take two (6 credits) classes in each summer session, or is it one class per 6-week summer session?

Some students will take one class during 1st session and one during 2nd, some will take one during either 1st or 2nd. Pretty unusual to take 2 during both, but I’m sure that happens too, it just depends. Second session has much higher attendance; first session tends to be people who’ve stayed in town to work and figure whattheheck I might as well take a class while I’m here, or people making up a class they need and that’s when it’s offered. Summer classes are not as numerous, you can’t count on everything being offered, obviously. LEAP (a freshmen entry-experience) is 2 classes, second session.
