So I just heard that I was a finalist today and was wondering how many people are chosen out of this group to actually get the scholarship.

What's the interview like/about?

Also, are there any benefits other than the 1.5k-2.5k?

I was chosen as a finalist for UCLA's alumni scholarship last year and, well, at least for transfers, they interview around 9 or so kids from within your district and they will select 2 or 3 total.

The interview was at a library and they had like a panel of alumni members from all ages. It was about 10 of them. They each ask a question like "if you could be one person in the world, who would it be?" or "what is the most important issue to you today?"

The kids are interviewed within a time span of 2 days. The interview is usually set on a weekday within late afternoon/evening-ish hours. Mine was at 6.

Anyways, then they call you like around 2 days later to tell you the results. I obviously didnt get it lol.

All in all, ucla chose around 50 or so scholars total from the whole state.

ps. from what i know, the scholarship award is rather small...around 3 thousand and thats it.

Is UCLA's process the same as Cal's? Thanks for the quick response!

it should be...i mean, it is alumni scholarship and it is a UC lol

oh, and definitely dress appropriately. I was very well-dressed, but i think i messed up on the answers trying to be extra funny. It totally killed it.

The UCB alumni scholarship is about $1500/year, but can increase in later years. You have to reapply each year for it, it is not automatically renewed.

There are 750 total alumni scholars at UCB, 250 of them freshman. You are really only competing against the people in your region.

At the interview, be interesting, be yourself, be memorable, talk about how you will be involved on campus, what you will do at Berkeley.

There are alumni scholar events, connections for mentoring with alums, 20% discount at the bookstore (I am not sure that applies to books, I think it is just the non-book stuff)

Woah woah woah, it's not a 1 on 1 interview?

I think it is one on one interviewing, but the alumni in your region are also interviewing many other students, those are the only ones against whom you are competing this year. Next year (whether you get it or not this year) you would reapply and all applicants are competing against each other for 500 scholarships for continuing students, so some frosh scholars will not be renewed.

I think they are very interested in what interesting aspects of life you will bring to the Cal campus.
