Questions about the application proccess or Exeter ask an Exonian!

Hello,

I'm a current Exonian soon to be an upper. I was admitted as a lower last year and had a great year. I'm sad I just found out about this website as i was looking into colleges.

If anyone has questions about the admission proccess, boarding life, or Exeter feel free to post here! I don't like messages though so just please post here!

Do you participate in sports? How is Exeter’s soccer team?

I do participate in a varsity sport and was actually an athletic recruit but for confidential reasons I’d like to keep which sport a secret, as some classmates and teachers do creep this site.

As for soccer we have always had a solid team. Boys went to semi in nespac and had a 13 win season. Girls are pretty good too but I don’t know exactly how many games they won and such.

How was your interview? I am super nervous! I’m not good at coming up with things on the spot if things don’t go according to planned. What’d they ask? What’d you ask? >.< Did you apply to other schools? Which and why’d you choose Exeter over them?

Phew lots of questions. :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks a lot!!! :)

Do the application essays change every year?

since the original poster of this board isn’t responding, i guess i’ll respond! i was also admitted as a new lower to exeter, and am a rising upper this fall.

@doomed: don’t be nervous! the interviewer is interested in getting to know you. don’t rush the interview, and try not to leave any awkward pockets of silence. some questions they may ask you are things like ‘why did you pick exeter?’ or ‘why boarding school?’ be prepared to answer those kinds of questions. also be ready to tell them about your extra-curricular activities and non-academic commitments. and i applied to SPS, deerfield, choate and exeter. i chose exeter because SPS and deerfield rejected me (i guess i just didn’t match up with them), and i felt like i could see myself more at exeter than i could at choate.

@leo, i’m pretty sure they retain a couple of key questions, but i think they shift one or two essays every year.

Thanks for your response. I will try to do well on my interview with your advice in mind.

Also, what were some of the big differences between Choate and Exeter? Thanks! :)

choate has a smaller student body, and i felt like their campus was a bit more spread out compared to exeter’s (or maybe that’s just my hazy memory talking). i’m not sure if choate does discussion-style classes for every subject, but exeter does, in the harkness method, and i was a big fan of that. i guess i was a bit biased due to me spending a summer at exeter for summer session, but i’m sure there are more distinct differences that i am just forgetting about at the moment. good luck!

to add on to aeroplanes comment earlier, I recommend practicing a two minute blurb about yourself to respond with when an AO asks you questions like “So, tell me about yourself?” or “What makes you unique?”

Even if they don’t ask you a question in a general format, you can pull sections of your ‘speech’ to answer other questions. In your ‘speech’ just sketch out points that you consider your ‘hook’ or in otherwords, quick facts about yourself that make you shine. BUT DISCLAIMER! DO NOT MEMORIZE A SPEECH TO RECITE! when you respond to a question you ALWAYS want it to sound natural, and not memorized. Simply have something in mind that you can easily say so that there are no awkward pauses.
