Questions for Exonians?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we had a lot of these during.. [winter break?], but no one seems to be answering now when people need them.

SO. A little bit about myself.
I'm a 2-year lower right now [10th grade], and I'm a boarding student from Pennsylvania.
Sports: squash, track
Music: violin. [Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra]
Clubs: A lot.

Do you know anyone who got off the waitlist there?

Yup. ^^
[10 char]

how did you get in??? haha

hahahaha, well… don’t ask me. I don’t even know… XD
Okay. revised question.

any question about Exeter life/activities?

hey, thanks for the offer
how about the revisit, which is in a couple of weeks - can you think of things to ask and do while at the revisit, that people would normally not think of, to get a good sense of the place ?
thanks !

i was accepted into Exeter, so YES! And YAY!

okay, so…

-how’s the swim test?
-how’s the reception for new lowers (student body-wise and dorm-wise)? do they tend to cluster together?
-why did you choose to go to exeter? i was accepted into choate too, and am really indecisive blarghhhh
-it looks like you have a lot of time-consuming activities 0= i heard chamber orchestra was also really intense, so how do you manage your day/time?! haha, i’m one of the most disorganized people ever, so it’d be awesome to pick up some tips =D
-are people pressured into playing sports? i heard from my friend in andover that over there, if you didn’t play at least 2 sports, you wouldn’t feel competent and would also be a bit alienated (not sure about the last part, and i don’t want to spread rumors.). basically, nearly everyone played sports because of that. is it like that at exeter?

AHHH SORRY THERE’S SO MUCH!! a thousand thanks!

What are the auditions for any of the orchestras (the ones with string instruments) like?

okay, so I was waitlisted -_- but it couldn’t hurt to ask about the school anyways, right? Haha…how are the people there? I know that’s gonna involve like a HUGE generalization, but I mean is it “hard” to make friends at exeter, especially as like a new lower? thanks so much for offering to answer questions!!

can you think of things to ask and do while at the revisit, that people would normally not think of, to get a good sense of the place ?

Things to ask, things to do… Well… There’s just… so much. It sounds cliched, yes, I know. That people wouldn’t think of? I would say stick around and talk to the teachers for a bit, and meet the other prospective students. It’s fun coming back and seeing people you saw the year before and saying, “I SAW YOU LAST YEAR AT THAT THING!”

-how’s the swim test?
It’s one lap in the pool. Doggie paddle. I know people who do. Don’t worry. It’s better than not taking it. [a couple of my friends didn’t take it]

-how’s the reception for new lowers (student body-wise and dorm-wise)? do they tend to cluster together?
New lowers, new uppers, PG’s, everyone’s welcome the same way. Sure at first, you don’t know anyone, but introduce yourself to people! The lowers [this year] had an ice cream social to relax, and to meet the new lowers, so that was a lot of fun. The dorms, well new students [who aren’t preps] tend to be placed in houses. [or the bigger dorms. but it all depends] And it’s true they cluster together, but that’s sorta inevitable… >.<

-why did you choose to go to exeter? i was accepted into choate too, and am really indecisive blarghhhh
Why? Well. Exeter was my top school, and during my tour before my interview, I KNEW the school was for me. Exeter’s strong math program also attracted me as well. I don’t know about Choate very well, I’m sorry. D:

-it looks like you have a lot of time-consuming activities 0= i heard chamber orchestra was also really intense, so how do you manage your day/time?! haha, i’m one of the most disorganized people ever, so it’d be awesome to pick up some tips =D
HAHAHAHA Chamber Orchestra isn’t AS intense as it sounds. I used to be horrible at using my time. During my free time, I eat as fast as I can, chat with friends in D-hall [dining hall. ^^], and I got a planner and wrote down all my homework for the day [as the classes come], and estimate how much time it would take to do that subject. Then I’d plan out my night accordingly. Last year, I’d sleep at 2 regularly, but this year, I managed to go to bed before midnight almost every day!
Time management will come to you eventually. >.<

NOOOO That’s fineeee. If you’ve heard about the prep spaz program already, my friends are proud that they were Tri-Varsity Prep Spaz. It’s not a pressure thing at all. People do drama instead, or do club sports. No pressure at all. [I play sports because I just want to stay fit… >.<]

What are the auditions for any of the orchestras (the ones with string instruments) like?
In the beginning of the year, go to the music building and make sure you sign up for an audition. [I forgot to do it until the last day this year… -_-] You play a piece until they stop you, and they ask you some random questions. No scales, no etudes, etc.

how are the people there? I know that’s gonna involve like a HUGE generalization, but I mean is it “hard” to make friends at exeter, especially as like a new lower?

It’s not hard at all. Trust me. You will NOT be left out unless you purposely become a hermit.

i have a question: how would i impress the interviewer? By being casual or formal and sophisticated? should i …?? plz helop my interview is on Monday!!

Be YOURSELF and be curious. Make them know that you are interested.

Please, do NOT try to impress the interviewer! It’s really important to let the interviewer see you for who you really are. They are very experienced at this and they will quickly see through someone trying to pretend being something that they aren’t. We all worry too much about the weak sides of ourselves, but these folks aren’t looking for perfection. Just be yourself - and be proud of it too!
