Questions About The College Application Process

As a Canadian senior, I’m slightl confused by the American college application process. I have a few questions, and I hope the parents in this forum can help me answer them.

How are reccomendation letters sent and must they be received by November 1st?

Is the online application to the university I’m applying to all I need to fill out in order to be done the appication process or is there additional information of some form I’m supposed to send in? I mean, people talk about selling themselves on resumes and all, so I’m wondering.

Are events such as performing at the Governor General’s Gala or at KD Lang’s concert worth mentioning or are they just too trifle to bother with?

Also, I’m wondering how people list all the awards that they’ve won seeing as I didn’t see any headings that told one to list awards.

I’d “really” appreciate it if someone could clariy things for me. :)

You need to fill the online application form, which should include an essay. You also need to include payment for the application fee.
The application form should include a line for honors and awards; if not, you could use the section ""Is there anything else you want us to know?" or wording to that effect. If not, send in a resume (snail mail, make sure to include your full name and date of birth so that it can be included in the rest of your file).

Your school should send in your transcript, your guidance counselor's report (this should include a school profile which explains how grades are calculated, the size and composition of the student body, the curriculum, and so forth). You should hand in recommendation forms to two teachers and ask them to either mail the forms themselves (include a stamped and address envelop with each form) or bring the letters to the guidance counselor to be sent together with the transcript and gc rec.

You also need to take the SAT & SATIIs if the colleges to which you are applying require them. Request the College Board to send the score reports to the colleges. You can do so by listing the colleges on your SAT form (you are entitled to 4 free reports; you can have additional reports sent to other colleges for a fee). The colleges have identification numbers.
If you do not fill out the names of the colleges on the SAT test form, you can request that the score reports be sent to colleges but you will have to pay for each report that is sent.

Performing at the concerts you list seems to me worth mentioning, especially if you want to highlight your musical talents (perhaps in your essay?)

Hope this helps.

Thanks, it helps a lot. About the recommendation letters, where can I find the forms? I thought that recommendation letters were to be written by teachers, and not forms that they were upposed to fill out? Also, if I send my scores on November 2nd, will the college receive it in time? (I'm applying ED)

The forms should also be online, together with the rest of the application (the part that you need to fill out). Besides filling out the forms (with basic information), the teachers should write at some length about you. This can be done on a separate sheet, and can be used for multiple applications.

Yes. Your part of the application needs to come by the deadline (ascertain whether it needs to be postdated or received by the deadline--colleges may vary). The rest can be sent a few days later. But the scores need to be sent directly from the CB. I believe that they do so electronically nowadays.

Most on-line apps can be downloaded. You can then print them out. The ones for recs and transcripts, should be printed out and then given to each pertinant body so that they can use them as "cover" for the info they will be sending to the college. You should fill in all info that you can, like names, school, etc to make it easy for your recommender. I recommend that you fill out one hard copy of an app so you have the info in front of you before tackling on-line apps.

Also, for the recommendations, make sure to give the teacher an envelope already addressed to the college in question, with enough postage .
