Questions about Tisch Affordability

I'd like to go to Tisch but as I've seen, NYU is expensive. I'm not even sure if I should take my chances and apply since the deadline is April 1st.

I know it's considered one of the best in terms of film and animation. That's why Id like to go.

A statement I continue to hear is "NYU is expensive, it'd be a waste to go there, except if you go to Tisch" and besides the great curriculum why is that? Do they give better aid or something? I see it's around $42,000. Is that like cheaper than other schools at NYU?

Plus, wouldnt I as a film major be asked to buy certain equipment and supplies for classes? I'd expecting majoring in film to cost more on those additional costs rather than someone who learns sitting in a classroom.

Basically lemme know other than it being a great film learning experience why it's affordable to go there. Because the common "NYU is expensive" points otherwise.

Absolutely it is worth it! And there are many reasons why.

1) Look at the list of alumni. Alec Baldwin, Angelina Jolie, Kristen Bell, John Cusack, Matthew Morrison, Dakota Fanning, Whoopi Goldberg, Donald Glover, Anne Hathaway, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Spike Lee, Adam Sandler, M. Night Shyamalan, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, and the list goes on and on! NYU is known for giving drama, film, dance, musical theatre, and music students the best training/education in the country. Also, as evidenced by this list, success follows.

2) Think about it this way: Say you go to apply for a job in your particular field. When the employer looks at candidates, they will immediately be more inclined to give the job to a person with a degree from NYU as opposed to someone with a degree from say Emerson College. You get immediate credibility when people see you studied at NYU.

3) Lastly, and most importantly, the environment. You are literally living in your workplace. New York presents spectacular opportunities for film, drama, dance, and music majors, because the industry is right at your fingertips.

Tisch is world-renowned, and I truly believe it is the best choice for anyone looking to be in the entertainment business!

Contrary to what CMac has said, it’s not absolutely worth it to go there.

Total cost of attendance is upwards of $60,000/year after you include room and board, general expenses, etc.

NYU gives notoriously bad financial aid.

Typically, people recommend that you should never go to a college which will require you to take out more than $40,000 in loans and, even then, that’s A LOT of money. People don’t seem to realize how long or how difficult it is to pay off $40,000 worth of student loans.

If your parents can afford, without taking on substantial debt or, preferably, any debt, to pay for you to attend NYU, by all means, attend.

However, given the employment prospects of art students and average salaries, paying off an NYU education from Tisch will take you YEARS as in 10+.

Certainly not worth the $60,000/year price tag if your family cannot afford to pay it up front.
