Questions about UC transfers

I am a community college student with 3 semesters to go, so I intend to transfer in the fall of '07 and take a semester off in spring '07. I just had a few quick questions:

1) Do they look at your overall GPA in all courses, or only those that will transfer? For example, would a B in a nontransferable journalism course be factored into the GPA they use to calculate admissions?

2) I am hoping to double major in communications and either political science (if Berkeley, since they don't have international relations) or IR. Does this make admissions harder? Easier? The same? This is of course assuming that I have the prereqs done, which I will.

3) At Cal would admission to poli sci or peace and conflict studies be tougher? The same?

I really appreciate your help here. I really want to go to Cal, so what GPA would be necessary there, considering I have strong EC's that show EXTREME dedication and will put a lot of time/thought into my essay?

Once again, thanks.

1) they only look at your transferable GPA
2) when you apply, you can only apply for one major. Once you matriculate you can add your second major
3) peace and conflict studies is easier to get into than poli sci because the former is a humanities major yielding a 40% admission rate while the latter is a social science major yielding a 17% admit rate

You should have at least a 3.7 GPA if you want to be very competitive

Thanks so much. So would it be best to work on PACS prereqs and apply as a PACS major and then add communications, since isn't it an impacted major?

1) they count everything, trust me on this without the courses that transfer I had a 3.8 and when I saw a UC rep I got a rude awakening they informed me that I actually had 3.4 (really deflated my confidence but luckily still got in to ucla my first choice
2) Honestly don't know
3)I would say peace is easier but again not certain
Obviously you want to try and achieve the highest possible gpa but I disagree with veritas I think a 3.5 or above for any uc is very competitive for the majors you are considering

Here's a short cut....and sadly a rude awakening for some. Check out the stats for the Cal rejects thread, I believe there is about three of them. Anyway.....if you look at their stats you might want to avoid those majors that absolutely require Honors+a 3.98 GPA, plus extensive EC's.

Those were not good times.....but good luck you thought...

tell u some good news

2 of my friends got in engineering department this year with 3.1 and 3.2 gpa.no kidding
