Hey all,
I have a BFA Theatre & Voice. I am looking for grad programs in Vocal Pedagogy. I’ve found 3 that I like so far:
- Penn State - MFA Musical Theatre Vocal Pedagogy
- Shenandoah University - MM Vocal Pedagogy in CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music)
- NYU Steinhardt - MM Vocal Performance w/ Advanced Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy
I’m very interested in teaching contemporary styles in addition to classical. So far these are the only schools I’ve found that offer what I’m looking for. Although NYU is a performance degree, I have a friend who just graduated from there and recommended it.
I really hope someone on here knows something about Penn State. Their program sounds incredible on their website but I cannot find reviews or alumni anywhere.
In addition to recommendations on programs, I would also love to hear any advice for applying/auditioning. I am very anxious about the process. I feel reasonably confident about the performance aspect of the audition, but as far as experience and resume value go, I’m worried.
Long story short: I stopped performing quickly after my undergrad, so I have little professional experience and a 4 year gap on my resume. However, I’m about to start teaching private voice lessons to theatre students at a performing arts high school. It’s an amazing opportunity and I’m hoping that having at least a couple months’ experience with that will boost my profile for grad schools.
Tl;dr
What are some good Vocal Pedagogy Programs?
What advice do you have for someone with little experience beyond a bachelor’s in performance?
Thanks guys!
