I'm currently a freshman at DePaul who aspires to major in Accountancy and Economics. I'm a member of the Strobel honors accounting program and DePaul's university honors program (aka liberal arts honors program). Regarding high school, I graduated in the top six percent of my class and scored a 29 on my ACT.

If anyone has any questions about the application process, life as a college student, the wonderful city of Chicago, or anything else, feel free to shoot me a message/email and I'll be glad to help.

I’m a commuter but if you’re planning on being in DePaul’s honors program, you should go for Seton Hall (where many of the honors students reside). I’m not too familiar about the others but I do know that University Hall is freezing cold (we had to sleep there overnight during orientation). Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with whichever dorm you choose.

Are there a lot of commuter students?

Were you able to make new friends even being a commuter?

Are there many things to do on campus on the weekends? (of course Chicago is right there too)

What is your favorite thing (or a few things) about DePaul?

Do people go to sports games much?

How do you like your professors?
I might have more after you answer these…

From my experience, most DePaul students are not commuters but there are a good amount that do commute. However, as mentioned in the other thread, I was the only commuter in my discover Chicago class (20 students).

Being in the honors liberal arts program and the Strobel honors accounting program, as well as a few clubs, I was able to make many friends while still being a commuter.

The campus hosts different events throughout the year and of course you can hop on the El train and go essentially anywhere in Chicago. The city has so much to offer so you shouldn’t have trouble keeping yourself amused :)

My favorite thing about DePaul is: it’s in Chicago (in my opinion, the greatest city in the world), it’s right next to the el stop which makes it easy to commute, the class sizes are small (usually capped around 35), the professors do their best to not only teach you, but to ensure that you pass the class with a good grade, it has a good reputation in the midwest, their business school as well as a few other departments are top-ranked in the nation, and many more!

DePaul’s well known for its men’s basketball team but they have struggled for the past few years. However, we got a new basketball coach this season, Oliver Purnell, signing him to a 7-year, 15 million dollar contract, so I expect the team to get better. The fan attendance is decent but it will vastly improve when the team starts winning more.

My professors are great! Three of my professors were UChicago grads, one being the former CFO of WGN! With that being said, my professors were very knowledgeable of their fields and for that reason, I believe I got a great education last quarter (and hopefully will for my upcoming years at DePaul).

I’ve been accepted to DePaul and I’m thinking about transferring there in the fall. I’ll be a junior and I’m planning to major in communications or journalism. I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, but I’m currently going to school in California. My only concern is that it will be difficult to make friends, especially since it will be my junior year and a lot of people probably already have friends they’ve known for a few years. How has your experience been meeting new people? Are people generally friendly? Is it easy to make friends in your classes? What about in the dorms? Also, what do you think about DePaul so far? Are the teachers good? Classes really as small as they say they are? And are the classrooms up to date? Or do they look like they’re from the 60’s or something? Thanks, and sorry this is kinda a lot of questions…

Sorry I have one more question: Is it difficult to get into classes you need at good times and with teachers you want? Cause at the school I’m at right now, it’s almost impossible cause they don’t offer enough sections of classes.

hey everyone!I’m interested in Depaul, planning to go there next fall.I heard from some current students and reviews that Depaul doesn’t have a social life, people aren’t willing to make new friends and new relatioships. The only places to meet people are bars and clubs.I’ve visited Depaul and liked it,everyone seemed nice so i don’t really know what to think…Can anyone, please, share his experience??

NTKS17 - Making friends is not difficult at DePaul. The students are very friendly and I can assure you it wouldn’t be a problem. In fact, if you joins clubs and organizations on campus, you will make a lot of friends! Regarding your question about teachers, I’ll just use my aforementioned response; My professors are great! Three of my professors were UChicago grads, one being the former CFO of WGN! With that being said, my professors were very knowledgeable of their fields and for that reason, I believe I got a great education last quarter (and hopefully will for my upcoming years at DePaul). In regards to class sizes, it varies, really. My largest class had about 35 students while my smallest class had around 20. I had no trouble getting in contact with my professors and was able to have a successful first quarter. The classrooms are pretty up to date and actually pretty nice. Regarding the difficulty to enroll for classes, it really depends on the class and when you try to enroll. If you enroll for your classes asap, you shouldn’t have a problem getting the class you want. On the other hand, if you procrastinate and wait a few days or weeks, you could run into trouble enrolling for the classes you desire.

kuna94 - That’s simply not true. From my experience, the students at DePaul are very friendly and you don’t have to resort to bars and clubs to make friends.

hey bluedemonbobo, i am international and are considering transfering to depaul, i´ve heard from some pople that its a good school with good job placements etc… but i´ve have also heard that its a bad school(academically speaking)… i have around 3.4 or 3.5 gpa, is it worth the shot, does it offer a good experience socially and academically???

do you have to apply for the strobel honors program? and if you do how do you apply?
also do you know if you can get into the program after your freshman year because i know that they do keep the same students together all four years

How has your experience been meeting new people? Are people generally friendly? Is it easy to make friends in your classes? What about in the dorms?

I found it pretty easy to make friends. The students of DePaul, at least those I have encountered thus far, have been very welcoming and friendly. It’s pretty easy to make friends in classes as well. Regarding dorms, I can’t comment on that because I am a commuter but it seems that those living on campus find it easier to make friends.

Also, what do you think about DePaul so far? Are the teachers good? Classes really as small as they say they are? And are the classrooms up to date? Or do they look like they’re from the 60’s or something? Is it difficult to get into classes you need at good times and with teachers you want?

I’m enjoying my time at DePaul to this point. The teachers that I have taken classes with are exceptional and are truly experts in their respective fields. For example, my macro and micro professors hold a PhD from the University of Chicago and Stanford, respectively. They truly know how to teach and can make their classes compelling.

Regarding the classrooms, they seem up to date.

In terms of getting into your aspired classes, it truly depends on the student. DePaul offers priority to honors (LAS) and Strobel honors students but that doesn’t mean someone in honors will have trouble getting into the classes they want. Generally, honors LAS and Strobel students are signing up for honors/Strobel courses, while the other courses are pretty much open until registration is open for everyone. Being an honors/Strobel student, I never found much difficulty signing up for courses and a few friends of mine who are not in the honors/Strobel programs have not had many problems either.

does the strobel honors program accept transfer students?

Unfortunately, DePaul does not accept transfers into the Strobel program. However, that’s not to say that you can’t land a Big 4 gig (or wherever you’re looking to go) with a non-Strobel accounting degree. I know people who aren’t in Strobel with high GPAs and big 4 internships and Strobel students with lower GPAs and interns at small companies/no internship at all. It really depends on the student.

Do you have to apply for the strobel honors program? and if you do how do you apply? Also do you know if you can get into the program after your freshman year because i know that they do keep the same students together all four years.

You cannot apply for the Strobel honors program. The only way to enter the Strobel program is via invitation, which you get based on your high school record. I believe the average ACT for Strobel students is 27 and the Average GPA is upwards of 3.7.

You cannot get into the program after your freshman year.

Hey bluedemonbobo, I am international and are considering transferring to depaul, i´ve heard from some people that its a good school with good job placements etc… but i´ve have also heard that its a bad school(academically speaking)… i have around 3.4 or 3.5 gpa, is it worth the shot, does it offer a good experience socially and academically???

DePaul would be a great choice for you. First of all, it’s in the heart of Chicago, a premier city in the world. DePaul does a superb job in terms of job placement. I’m not too familiar with the colleges besides the college of commerce but I’m certain that the college of commerce is excellent in job placement. In fact, BusinessWeek gave DePaul an A for job placement.

Regarding DePaul’s academic reputation, it’s pretty good in my opinion and is getting better. DePaul has a 74% acceptance for freshmen, with students having an average ACT score of 25. Obviously, the education you receive really depends on you. DePaul has produced some very successful people. Some examples are Jack Greenberg (former CEO of McDonald’s), James M. Jenness (CEO of Kellogg), both Richard Daleys (mayors of Chicago), and many more.

With a 3.5 GPA, you have a good shot of being admitted. It would be a great experience socially and academically.

I’d like to thank you ahead of time for doing this! I will be an upcoming freshman majoring in accounting as well. Two questions. Were you offered into the Ledger & Quill Accounting Scholarships Program? And are you on a full ride to college? Thanks!

I received the Dean’s scholarship but I was not chosen as a candidate for the Ledger and Quill freshman scholarship. However, L&Q offers many different scholarships that one can apply for after matriculating. Am I on a full ride? I am not, but with my scholarship and grants, I only had to take 7.5k in loans. However, it’s definitely worth it considering the opportunities that I have been presented with. As a freshman, I have already had 2 interviews for an internship and may be interning this summer. DPU’s business program is truly elite and Strobel students are highly coveted by the big 4 :)

Thanks! One more question, is the Strobel’s program a specific program in Accounting? Because I’ve been offered to apply at the university honors program. Is that the same thing? Let me know!
