Questions for a current SLO student

Can you tell me about:

 • Greek life, if there is any
 • Amount of homework (i never hear anyone complain, but just want to know)
 • Required internships?

And any tips on how to survive!!!

:) Thanks

Greek life definitely has a presence, but it’s not like huge like it is at some schools where basically everyone takes part in it. But it if it’s something you’re interested in, you can find other people who are as well.

Amount of homework really, reallly, reallllly depends on your major. I’ve heard of many engineering majors pulling multiple all nighters (there was usually some procrastination involved though). If your arch, expect to spend a lot of time in studio. Math/science majors seem to have a decent but managable amount. Business is generally not too bad. I feel like liberal arts probably has the least, but there are definitely times where we put in quite a few hours working on things.

Some majors require internships in order to graduate, others do not. You can search the Cal Poly catalog to see which ones do and don’t. Even if an internship is not required, it’s good to get one to get some experience. I’ve heard of business, engineering, and arch people (like alumni) coming to Cal Poly to recruit interns.

There is Greek life but it isn’t that existent. You can find some people wearing Greek hoodies, but coming from Los Angeles, it is nothing. You find more people wearing school sweaters. A lot of girls end up rushing fall or winter quarter because it is a good way to connect. There isn’t anything too serious and most frats/sorts are associated with So-Cal (and a lot with SB because of distance wise).

Amount of homework (i never hear anyone complain, but just want to know)
Homework is doable, just work on time management. There are some projects where it takes a bit of time to get it through our minds. But you can defientely have a social life and homework and a decent amount of sleep. However right before finals, don’t expect any spots in the UU or library.

Required internships?
I haven’t heard of any majors that required internships but most kids get them through professors or mustang jobs. But there are places that recruit interns.

Tips to surivive:

 • Be social and go to all the WoW events. You meet tons of people that way.
 • Learn how to use the bus. It is free (part of student fees) and it a great way to get out of campus.
 • Be ready to stay 4-5 years at this school regardless of majors due to budget cuts.

My major requires you to have an internship.
