I was just wondering what the student life was like there. My sister goes there and says there isn’t much to do if you don’t have a car or know someone who does. Also says the buses stop going to downtown at like 8:00. Can anyone refute this? Or tell me a little more about student life there? I plan on applying early decision for business.

My daughter found a wonderful niche at Cal Poly her freshman year. It all started with WOW (Week of Welcome.) They really know how to transition the students to college life. She lived in Yosemite and her dorm mates became like a family. They socialized in their dorm or went out to various parties, out to eat, the movies, hikes, the beach, you-name-it! She also joined and became the PR/Media coordinator for a club on campus affiliated with her major. She didn’t take her car, but she still managed to find rides or walk/bike or take the bus. I would say that if your sister is bored or doesn’t have anything to do, she just hasn’t tried hard enough. Believe me, there are plenty of activities on campus and in the SLO area for students.

It definitely helps a lot to have a car, but you don’t absolutely need one to have fun or be happy. What you really need is to meet people and make friends. Some of the most fun I’ve had has just been hanging out in people’s rooms at school. There are a lot of on campus clubs and they try and bring in like performing events and stuff. The buses do end their routes at around 9 pm, but you can still walk back from like downtown and stuff and I feel like it’s pretty safe. Going to the beach and far off campus can be difficult though if you or someone you know doesn’t have a car, but chances are at least one person you know will have one. Also, bikes can be pretty handy if you don’t have or can’t bring a car.
