Questions for current Middlebury students in 3-2 Engineering program

Hello guys. My sister has been accepted to Middlebury for Fall 2014 and she is interested in 3-2 Engineering program.
She is interested in Environmental Studies major but she is willing to go with Biology or Physics if it makes easier to meet the engineering requirements.

Can you guys briefly tell me what the minimum course requirements at Middlebury to be able to go to Engineering schools?

Congratulations to your sister Transferi! My S is a current junior in one of the 3-2 programs and has at least 3 other Midd kidds doing the same program. There are at least 2 different programs currently, one with Columbia and the other with Dartmouth. Currently the Dartmouth program seems to be much more popular. Although son originally intended to do the Columbia program, he changed his mind after speaking with Midd Kids who were currently doing both programs. If your sister would like to get in touch with him, send me a PM and I will forward his email address to you. The Columbia program is a guaranteed admission thing and after 3 years you leave Middlebury, basically transfer to Columbia and when you complete your 2 years at Columbia, you receive both your degrees. The Dartmouth program is called a 3-2 program but most kids do it as a 2-1-1-1 program. They complete 2 years at Midd, do their junior year at Dartmouth, go back to Midd for their senior year and graduate with their class. After that, they go back to Dartmouth for their 5th year (if they choose to) and receive their bachelor degree in engineering. The requirements for both programs are slightly different and the Dartmouth program is not guaranteed, but Middlebury has an excellent record in placing students there. Physics will definitely be the easiest way to complete both the requirements for Midd and the engineering school but surely is not the only path. Here is a link for the Columbia requirements <a href=“Preprofessional Programs | Middlebury College”>Preprofessional Programs | Middlebury College; and here is one for the Dartmouth program <a href=“Preprofessional Programs | Middlebury College”>Preprofessional Programs | Middlebury College; . If she goes to campus for revisit days, she could try and set up a meeting with the person who is filling in for Scharstein who is the usual advisor but is on leave this year. Her name is Susan Watson, Professor of Physics and Pre-Engineering Adviser for 2013-14

Best of Luck to your sister whatever she decides!

Thank you for the post KarateDad. My D is seriously considering this option over Tufts/Northwestern engineering> She visited a couple of weeks ago and is planning on revisiting so the contact information will be helpful. Although I have not had the chance to visit I get the feeling (from the correspondence they have exchanged with my D and an alum she has met) that it would be a wonderful experience. It would also let her experience a real winter in contrast to a Texas Gulf Coast one.

Thank you so much KarateDad! Now we can see much clearer path for her!
