So I know the University Scholars program offer full-tuition and travel stipends and such, but could a current Scholar please tell me what the experience was like? How much individual attention were you given by the University? Was it easier to get a co-op or get into a class with Scholar status? Do you feel the program has prepared you for life after college? Thanks so much for answering these questions; any other personal stories/ experiences are greatly appreciated.
I’m a current third year University Scholar (from the first cohort) and I’d be happy to answer any of your questions! First off, I LOVE the program. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people, support system, advisors and opportunities. As Scholars, we are given a lot of attention from the University and members of the administration. We also get a lot of individualized attention from the directors of the program, which, to me, is the most helpful/important. I’ve never used my Scholars affiliation to get into a class (it’s really very easy to usually get the classes you need anyways), but when applying for co-op if definitely helps to have this prestigious program on your resume. The opportunities for Scholars are endless - they offer summer research grants and opportunities to go abroad on the Dialogue of Civilization programs for free. We also do a ton of fun events over the year, including a traditional Boston clambake, theater, cooking classes, trips to historical places in MA, tickets to see important/famous people when they come to Boston (I saw the Dalai Lama this fall), and so much more. The program is a really tight-knit community, with all the resources of a large university. I’d be happy to talk more about my experience if you want!
@Boston 456 could you talk to me please if you have time!
Hi Boston456–
I was accepted into the University Scholars program as well and will be visiting for the weekend March 20-23. Would love to hear more about your experience if you have a chance.
Thanks!
Hi everyone, I was accepted too. I wanted to know, how many are selected? And then how many choose to enroll?
Also, what is the outlook for graduate schools? Are scholars consistently accepted to reputable business and graduate programs?
They’re aiming for a class of about 120, and in the past they’ve had about a 30-35% matriculation rate for applicants selected as Scholars, so that’s about 350 this year.
The Scholars program is new, so the first class hasn’t graduated yet, but they’re on a very strong track for great careers and graduate programs. Things like Scholars research funding, faculty fellows, and mentoring provide support and opportunities beyond the already great opportunities for all students. I fully expect members of the first graduating class of University Scholars to go on to grad schools like MIT, Harvard, etc.
@nanotechnology Cool! Since the USP is 3 years old, what about students that are NOT in USP, and have graduated in the past, and have gotten into top schools? Do you know anyone (perhaps personally, or close friends with) that has gotten into top business schools like Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, UChicago, Duke, Wharton, Dartmouth, Columbia, MIT, or UC-Berkeley?
@lb43823
I was just at the university scholars welcome event (at which, by the way, @nanotechnology did a wonderful job helping to make the school look kickass).
They mentioned a few pretty impressive grad schools, Oxford, MiT, and Harvard Med all being the home of northeastern students who have graduated within the last 5 years (albeit they are a very small minority).
@julianstanley I see. I wonder, maybe I met you at the event haha. Do you plan on matriculating? What major?
@julianstanley - When you asked a question at the College of Science session, your name sounded so familiar it took me awhile to place why I knew it!
I feel like I don’t get to have the well-known prestige of Oxford since I picked Imperial College London for grad school, even though it’s a better program for bioengineering.
@lb43823
Very possible! I’m awful with names and generally remembering things, but we may have.
I’m pretty much decided on Northeastern and biochemistry.
I’ll wait for Harvard & Yale decisions and the results from a scholarship competition at Clark before making anything final, but I think Northeastern is probably the best fit for me overall.
@nanotechnology Did you go straight from undergrad to grad, or did u take a break to do some job or get further work exp?
@julianstanley Ah so you only applied to Harvard and Yale? I have a question for you if you can PM btw
@lb43823 - I’m graduating the spring and heading to Imperial in the fall. I was one the students speaking at the dinner on Sunday evening.
