Questions for current students about Dorms/Roommate

There is a good chance that I will go to UCSD and I have a few questions about dorms and the roommate selection process.

I want to have a double dorm, but am afraid of the roommate I might get because of this I am considering a single dorm.

What are the pros/cons of having a single, double, or triple dorm? (specifically muir)

Can you switch roommates if you dont get along with them?

Are there a lot of thefts in the dormitories and if so what can you do to prevent your items from getting stolen?

For a first year student, what kind of dorm would you recommend?

I appreciate any help and apologize if any of these questions were asked in other threads.

is a single dorm where ur all by urself? hmmm

first of all: RELAX
These are nearly all normal people they got into ucsd didn't they?- no one is going to kill you in your sleep.

little to no thefts in dorm rooms

Go for a single if you are thinking about it. It's really easy to meet other people in your suite/floor and if you have the single chances are all your friends will want to hangout in your room when their roomates are getting on their nerves. You probably won't be best friends w/ your roomate anyway. A single is definately worth the money.

Triples suck- Avoid them at all costs. There is hardly space to walk across the room :(

It's very difficult to request a room change. However I have friends who did mutual roomate exhanges within their floor- it's fairly common.

lol sorry about sounding paranoid. I am not so worry about a psycho roommate, but a roommate that will irritate the hell out of me.

But thanks for your advice, right now I am leaning towards a single.

get a single! seriously, you won't regret it.

I know a slut who loves her single for obvious reasons, but they seem pretty depressing overall, go for a double

why are they depressing?

hell no they're not depressing, unless you're the type that gets sad and lonely easily haha.

you won't be lonely at all in a single. you'll get to know everyone in your suite easily enough and won't ever feel like you're alone.

everyone needs their privacy sometimes and getting a single is the only way you'll get it.

Nope, not depressing at all, since all the dorms are organized as suites. I go in and out of other people's rooms all the time.

Alright, I got a question. Can you request to be on the same floor as someone, and not necessarily the same room?

that's a good question, and i'd like to know the answer to that as well

that's not a choice you have on the application, but maybe you could call and arrange it with them?

i doubt it though...

Yeah, don't count on it...

...ok.... i think muir dorms are great... and i live in a triple.. and i requested it..

anyways... theres no thefts... but better safe than sorry.. at the beginning a lot of people were locking their laptops and keeping their doors... but now its all relaxed and people really dont care...

anyways... singles ...well its not hard to describe... its a single... and yeah... it just costs more money...

i heard they are not planning to do a lot of doubles next year because there is supposed to be a lot of people (i heard this from my HA)...

i think triples are fine... if you dont get along with one roommate, you might with the other... haha there arent THAT many freaks at ucsd =D ... yeah plus you save money... i applied for the ratesaver i love my roommates ... yeah and theres lots of space im my room... we bought coffee table thing for the middle of our room =P yeah.. i guess the best thing to do is to actually look and take a tour and look around... =)

from what ive seen i think that muir dorms are the biggest... ive seen triples at sixth and basically the only space is a walkway between bunkbeds XP

oh and ive heard about a couple people that requested to live on the same suite and they did... but i think both people have to put it on thier application ...

What Is A Single? What Is A Double? What Is A Triple? Define!

Uh, a single holds one person, a double holds two people, and a triple holds three people...

if this helps: a single is usually half the size of a double, and a triple is three people put into a double.

What room type is most desired? Will they put me with a roommate in a single even if it's meant to hold only one person?

Depends on what you like and no, but they may put you in a triple even if you request a double because of space issues.
