Questions for current students

Hi. Appreciate any replies from current students or relatively recent alum or their parents who know.

  1. How assured is a student of getting a job on campus if they want one, even if they are not receiving financial aid? Is there jobs for everyone or is it competitive? Are most of the jobs food service? Does Davidson pay people who do jobs like working in the theater or doing research for a professor, etc.?
  2. How easy is it to double major or major/minor? How many courses are required for the typical major?

Thanks.

My D just started at Davidson and doesn’t have work study but she was looking at the postings b/c she’s interested a a campus job at some point. The ones she mentioned were working at the gym checking students in, a library job, and a ticket office job at the performing arts center. I don’t think research jobs are work-study – but they do have plenty of those opps and some are paid if over the summer I think. She didn’t mention any food service jobs but maybe she just wasn’t interested in them. I don’t think they would be in the kitchen or washing dishes – more like at checkouts at the convenience market and such I believe.? Not exactly sure.

Double majors and minors are common. You can look at the website for details regarding how many courses required for a major, but they don’t have a super intensive core so there’s good opportunity to explore many subjects.

I’ll slight amend my last point – Davidson is very academically intensive – so I should have said ‘super restrictive core.’

Hello! My D is also a freshman and got a job the first day classes started. She works 8 hours a week and it was easy to configure around her class schedule. Getting a job seems quite easy if you follow Davidson’s instructions. This will tell you more: https://www.davidson.edu/offices/human-resources/student-employment

Hi! I am a current student at Davidson- a lot of the jobs around campus are not food-based (we have a great staff that covers food service). I myself am a work-study through the financial aid office, and from what I understand, work-studies get priority over non-work-studies. However, there are a plethora of jobs available on campus with a variety of styles/hours available so it seems pretty easy to get a job on campus.

As for your second question, double majoring/minoring is something that is quite common at Davidson. Typically majors require somewhere between 10-12 courses and minors require around 6 courses. It’s definitely possible to double major or to major and minor, but some students in majors with more labs find it hard to fit in lab time when double majoring or when majoring and minoring.
