Questions For An Exonian?

Hey guys I'm a prep at Exeter right now and I'm Winter break so I have some time to answer questions. Ask anything you like, I'll try to answer. Hope this will help some people.

hey…
what is Exeter like?
are the people there happy?(some people say that they look depressed, so just wondering)

Hey A7X,
1.It’s hard to say what Exeter is like, everyone’s experience is going to differ, there isn’t one general experience. It’s so different depending on who you are.

I hate being so vague but I really can’t answer your question. Personally, I’m really happy here, I’m surrounded by really close friends, great teachers, and nothing is going wrong for me. So for me, Exeter is the happiest place on earth, and I can go into more detail as to why if you want but know that some people are really unhappy and some are really happy, I’d like to think that the majority are like me but I think you really need to ask them individually to know for sure

I don’t think people are really unhappy or depressed (at least thats not how it is for me) Most of my friends and the people in my dorm and stuff are generally really happy. sure everyone goes through that time at like 10:00 at night when you realize you still have an english paper and a lab report to write and you still haven’t done your math homework because you’ve been procrastinating (or maybe that’s just me). Or when you just had dinner and you realize “ugh I have to go do work”. There’s always going to be stressful times but I think (at least for me) the good outweighs the bad.

yeah, thanks…what do you guys do on the weekends?
do people get to go out of the campus a lot…or do they mostly stay on campus?

Well we have class until 12:30 on Saturdays so we only have half of Saturday, but generally I’ll spend a lot of time in Exeter’s “lobby” also known as the Agora, which is right next to the Grill, exeter’s food/convenience store. I’ve spent many many hours in Agora just sitting with friends. At night there’s movies and dances and going out to eat and 2 hour V’s, but just in general I spend Saturday with my friends around campus.
Sunday… nearly everyone is sleep deprived and Sunday is the one day we don’t have to get up early for anything so most people aren’t even up till around 1pm and then they have to finish homework due Monday so Sunday is pretty quiet. Hope that helps

Wekends are usually pretty chill. On Saturday nights you can go to the mall. They usually have a dance on saturday nights also. Saturday afternoons you can go to the sports games and stuff. If you’re on a sports team you usually either have practice or a game that afternoon. Sundays are the same except you know that you have school the next day so sometimes homework is the best thing to do. I usually go to the gym on sunday mornings and then to brunch. The omelets are probably one the best things at the school (my opinion). You can pretty much do what you want until check-in.

hmmmmm…ok…thanks!

how is spaz(i think its called)? do many preps make jv/v? are the 3rds? how much work would you say you have on average? how does it compare to sayy nmh?

Spaz- Well, theres some pressure to play a sport for guys, like any school. I got cut from wrestling and waterpolo, so I’ve been in spaz for two terms now. Theres a bit of shame associated with it, but spaz itself is fine. It’s very easy going, a lot like a PE class, they try to introduce everyone to new sports.

It depends on the team for whether or not a prep will make JV/Varsity. For football, there were no cuts whatsoever for JV. But only two preps made varsity football. It depends on the sport for how competitive the team is to make. I can probably find out if theres a specific team you’re interested in?

I probably have around three hours of homework per night. Keep in mind though, that people can turn three hours into an hour or 5 hours depending on how important the paper or test is or if they just need some sleep. One really interesting thing about Exeter is the way homework is assigned… most of my classes only collect homework once a week or so. We end up having very few graded assignments, but we do have assigned homework every night. Since its not always taken up though, people will often gamble and not do it hoping it won’t be taken up that way they can sleep or have fun a little longer. When we do have tests, though, people will cram, A LOT.

No idea about nmh, sorry. I know near nothing about it.

how abt for jv girls soccer? how many cuts if u know?

I’m not sure for girls. I know boys soccer had more than 10 cuts. It was extremely competitive. The girls team could be completely different though I have no idea. A prep was varsity MVP this year though which was really impressive. Sorry I can’t give you a number though.

Do you know any information on girls basketball?

Again, I’m a guy so I know many more details pertaining to the male teams. I know the male basketball team is very competitive; I’d like to say around 7 of 20 were cut. I honestly have no idea about the girl’s team though. I think it was less competitive though, probably much less because I haven’t heard of anyone being cut.

I know this is girls so you probably don’t know but what about JV field hockey ? how many preps made V?

Oh, I actually do know the answer to that: none. There’s only one prep on JV. I think mostly just because the sport is fairly uncommon. Or atleast it was where I’m from.

Thanks!

10char

for girls basketball I don’t think JV was super competitive but I think varsity was. there is one prep though.

There were at least two preps in JV field hockey this year, though I don’t think any preps made the Varsity team. As far as girls’ basketball, there are a lot of preps in the JV team but only one prep in the Varsity team.

A lot of Exonians are very athletic, so each Varsity team (as far as I know…this year) have from 0-3 (around) preps. You have to remember that making the JV team is already a big accomplishment.

Is Exeter a happy place?
Heck yes it is! Sure, the work load is tough and we get challenged a lot, but Exonians find a lot of ways to have fun! That’s why people always complain about having too much homework - they spend so much time procrastinating, doing fun things. Sometimes, I will spend an hour on dinner just talking to friends, then spend 10 minutes on lunch the next day so I can finish my homework. :P

If you go to [Phillips Exeter Academy | Home](http://www.exeter.edu) then athletics then athletic team pages then coaches/rosters you can see the list of students on each team and their year of graduation. For example I just did it for JV Boys Ice Hockey and there are 6 preps on that team.
