I'll be entering Cornell this fall as a junior transfer majoring in AEM. For current Cornellians, can you tell me:

-What is the workload for AEM like? I know it's said to be one of the "easier" majors, but will I be able to balance say, 6 classes per semester, involvement in clubs, and a social life and also maintain a 3.7-4.0 GPA?

-How are transfers treated at Cornell? Is it easy for them to adjust?

-Are we at a disadvantage when it comes to internships/recommendations or leadership positions in clubs?

-Also, I was very involved with Student Government at my previous school (I was president). Does SGA at Cornell have a strong presence? Does it require a lot of time?

-Is it worth it to join a frat at this point? I know a few recruit in the fall; are they any good? Are the business frats worth joining?

-I've read some conflicting info on double majoring. As a student in CALS AEM, can I double major, for example, in History at CAS? What about minor?

-Do junior students go to frat parties? Or mostly collegetown bars/clubs?

That's it. If anyone has questions about the transfer process, I'll glady share any info with you.

Thank you in advance!

i’m pretty sure you cant double major outside of your school, but you can minor. not 100% sure though.

That’s what I thought initially. Is a 6 class schedule managable without burning out mid semester?

You are correct.

It depends on you and the classes you are taking. I took 6 classes for a total of 18 credits, worked 15 hours a week and had EC obligations. I was booking it all semester…and it was tough. But then again, I had one semester where a took 12 credits, but 8 of those credits was organic chemistry and physics so it wasn’t easy by any means.

For your first semester, I recommend you take 15 credits (4-5 classes, depending on credits). If you find yourself doing well, then you can take more credits in subsequent semesters.

thank you dew drop, i’ll probably sign up for 6 classes and drop one if anything

That sounds like a workable plan. You have 7 weeks to drop a class without getting a W on your transcript. That works well because you’ll have had at least one exam or other significant graded item, so you’ll be able to gauge how well you’re handling the course load.

Also, I’d like to participate in the Cornell in Washington D.C. program for a semester. Since as a transfer I only have 2 years at Cornell, will this be a problem?

Great questions JoeThePlumber09. I’m looking for response for these as well.

Yes, because as a transfer you are required to take classes at Cornell for at least four semesters. However, talk to your adviser (when you get one) to ask about this. Concerning internships/recommendations, I woulld just advise that you get to know your professor right off the bat and do well to get a good GPA and you should be fine. People won’t know you’re a transfer until you tell them. Transfers adjust pretty well socially. Academically, it’s a little harder.

Hey I am actually looking to apply as an AEM transfer for fall of 2010. if u wouldn’t mind could you share your stats and any advice on the transfer application process in general. thanks a lot for your help.
