Questions from mom of admitted student

When will freshmen housing information be sent, and how will it arrive? What will the choices include (i.e., dorm-type? roommate type?)

Do W&M freshmen typically pick their own roommates nowadays, and if so, where do they go to look? I've been encouraging this space cade of mine to get out there and see if there is any roommate shopping going on, but she insists that there isn't(!).

I read a while ago about some kind of summer get-together for admitted freshmen each year, like a camping or hiking trip that takes place in July. Has that been announced for this summer yet?

Most importantly, my child would like to take some college summer courses at Mary Washington (or the equivalent). She is thinking about taking Intro to Stats and maybe another intro course on Religion or Philosophy. This is partly due to the fact that she is nervous about arriving at W&M potentially without any AP Credit. My questions are as follows:
a. How do we make sure ahead of time that the classes are approved for credit AND for will apply towards GER (i.e., Stats towards GER 1 and a Religion/Philosophy Course towards GER 7)?
b. Have admitted freshmen ever been allowed to arrive the summer before to W&M and take classes there (live in the dorms, etc.)?

Thanks for such a great, informative, and active thread!

Addressing #2…I have seen on the facebook page William and Mary Class of 2015 many students introducing themselves and some putting out a shout out for prospective roommates.

The student housing questionnaire will be available online after May 1. It asks about living style and whether you prefer a large or small residence hall. Housing assignments are emailed in late July.

The Class of 2015 Facebook page seems to have a lot of chatter about finding roommates. However if students don’t have a roommate in mind Residence Life will match them with one based on the housing questionnaire.

There are pre-Orientation trips for freshman run through various offices including the Rec Center and the Office of Community Engagement and Scholarship. Information on those will also be available after May 1 when the welcome website becomes a pre-Orientation website.

Unfortunately we cannot insure that any credit will transfer prior to the course being completed. There’s only one administrator on campus who handles all transfer credit and she unfortunately doesn’t have the time or resources to provide pre-approval so to speak. You are welcome to contact her for some guidance as to which courses to take but again she likely cannot offer any assurances.

While incoming students can take classes over the summer they unfortunately cannot live on campus to the best of our knowledge however you can contact the University Registrar’s office (757-221-2800) to confirm

PS: Coming in without AP credit is certainly okay. Students need only average 15 credits per semester (5 classes) to graduate in 8 semesters.

fountain, my D, who will graduate in May, took a course last summer at our local CC (as a prerequisite for a course she took in the fall) and had to get pre-approval in order to gain credit, so by all means check beforehand. Also, last time I read relevant materials, it was not possible to get GRE credit for other than a W&M course, so check that too.

Your D shouldn’t worry if she comes in without external credits. She’ll have lots to pick from at W&M, and I hope she has as good an experience as mine!

Fountain: As far as roommates, my junior daughter did the survey and the school gave her a roommate. It worked out very well. Since both girls were from NOVA, they met prior to the start of school. My daughter enjoyed living with someone from a different religious and cultural background. They chose not to live together the second year but that was because they were interested in different type dorms. One wanted a language house and the other wanted an all girls dorm.

smdur, the regulations are a bit different for students who have not yet enrolled than those who have and students can get credit for W&M GERs even if those classes aren’t taken at W&M but again that may only apply to classes they take before enrolling at W&M and not after

All academic (ha ha) to me at this point! But during D’s tenure at W&M, which has been great, she learned that it’s best to check things twice (or three times), since sometimes info is not where you expect!

Absolutely. We would also encourage any enrolling student to consult with the Registar before taking summer college courses for which they hope to receive credit

On an unrelated topic: How competitive is it for spots on the club teams, particularly lacrosse (both boys and girls)? If its very competitive, is there an active intramural program?

My kids have done indoor soccer, outdoor soccer, volleyball and floor hockey, and probably something I’m forgetting. I’m not sure about lacrosse.

Generally, any interested student is welcome on a club team. Some club teams have competition squads and non-competition squads depending on the extent to which they compete off campus and against other schools. Generally those that are more competitive will have try outs for the competition squad. Please feel free to contact the individual teams and ask about their tryouts if any are present. This page ([William & Mary - Sport Clubs](http://www.wm.edu/offices/recsports/sportclubs/index.php)) lists all club sports team and each team has contact information on its individual page.
