Two questions:

a. Are dorm printers easily accessible? I don't want to clutter up my room, so I am not sure if I should buy a printer for my room.

b. How about backup storage or extra storage? How much does each student get and how convenient it is? Should I bring my own backup storage for my laptop? (e.g, USB based external disk storage or NAS based external storage).

c. According to MIT's webpage, we are not allowed to have switches or router in our room ... is that true? ... given that MIT is going wireless(WIFI), I assume there is no problem of having multiple wireless devices in the dorm room?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

a) Not all dorms have printers, but printers are pretty easily accessible around campus. Most campus printers only print black and white, though, so if you really love printing out class notes in color (ie you are pre-med) bring your own. If not... athena printing = free.

b) Athena lockers are currently 1 GB, and backup is easy using Filezilla or SecureFX (my preference), both available free of charge from MIT. I have a USB drive and find that it works fabulously for supplementing my Athena backup.

c. i'd be wary about messing about with network things, mostly b/c people do it and **** up and then the network breaks for everyone and ohhhh the hate...
so, not that it's never been done, ever, but it's not advised. wait til you get here and can talk to more knowledgeable people in person, gently. and by "more knowledgeable" i mean your friendly neighbourhoos RCC.
