What stuff to bring for the dorms...

Hey

So I've been thinking of stuff to buy/take that I would need for my room. Besides the laptop, do you think it's wise for me to take a desktop PC and install it in my room? Is it too 'dangerous' (getting it stolen or something) or am I being paranoid? It's cuz I've requested to be roommates with a friend I know, but if we don't get picked I think it's gonna be awkward to have a PC around...And what about printers/scanners?

Could you guys give me advice on what I could bring/not bring?

Thanks

hey I'm a current GT student, so here are my two cents:

I think you're talking about bringing two computers to school right? A labtop and a desktop? I would say, in regards to it being wierd, it's really not a problem. People don't really care what you do, though I would say not too many people bring both a laptop and a desktop together. Some people like to, whether because they game a lot, because that just fits their lifestyle, it fits how they work, whatever. In regards to it getting stolen, I would say that like any college campus, just don't be stupid about it. That is to say, take the general precautionary measures, like, buy a labtop lock and secure your equipment. It probably doesn't hurt as well, to not advertise having a super awesome computer either (if it indeed really nice). That being said, and don't call me on this, I think theft is a little less of a problem here than I thought it'd be. Of course, lock your door when you're out and all that related common sense goodness.

Printer, scanner? I would say most people bring a printer. A lot of printers nowadays are the kind that integrates it with a scanner (and perhaps a fax machine), like you know those Lexmark or HP all-in-ones? In that sense, I guess people bring scanners too. Not a huge problem not to have a printer at school, though I would say if you have one, and are willing to bring it, it certainly proves to be convenient from time to time.

And in general about advice of what to bring, and what not to bring? To start off, here's an interesting piece of advice I got from a friend, I can't remember who: "Don't bring anything to school you don't mind getting stolen."

That certainly seems like some very wise advice, perhaps a little jaded though; I would think that that's a little too cautious, but it certainly doesn't hurt to keep that in mind when you think about whether or not you want to bring your super awesome electronic gizmo(s).

To add to a discouragement to bring too much stuff, also realize your room is probably smaller than you might imagine. I mean, not impossibly small, but probably bring a little less stuff than you thought. Perhaps, bring all the stuff you want to in the car with you, and anything you can't end up fitting, just put in the car and have your parents take back home with them.

Also realize that in all honesty, all you need to bring to school when you first come here, is your computer, and your clothes. Everything else like school supplies and books and stuff, you can, and perhaps should buy here.

And here are some things I realized were really useful freshman year:

Shower sandals, shower caddy, comfortable sheets and blankets (spend extra! Seems stupid but you spend a third of your day in bed lol...so get something you find to be really comfortable), a usb drive (you'll probably never end up burning CD's/DVD's btw), a dry erase board (those are fun, and maybe even useful), an alarm clock!, a desk lamp (so maybe when your room mate goes to sleep, you can still work if you need to), annnddd...I dunno if i can think of anything else that sticks out.

Oh, bring some band aids or something. And some tylenol/advil. You would probably find that useful at some point.

Hope that helped...

Condoms, or some form of contraceptive....girls lie.

Agreed.....

haha...leaving jokes aside, will gatech give us a good guid about what and what not to bring?
