Questions on NYU

Hi guys.. i am currently deciding what colleges to apply for and which ones to go to... i saw that NYU has one of the top business schools and was wondering if anyone knew the student profiles for the 2010 class. the averege SAT, ACT, and ect.. I was also wondering if they would offer any good financial aid packages..... please help... thank you

Oh man, let’s start with the important part. NO, NO, NO, NYU does not offer good, or even decent, aid!!!

^^^I went to one of their campus vists, the presenter of the information session boasted they have “good FA”. I think what he meant was that if a “Harvard Merit Scholarship winner” applied there, you might get a matching FA package.

That makes sense because Harvard has zero merrier aid.

does income affect how much aid they offer you because my friends brother goes to nyu and he got both his freshman and sophomore years paid… and hes currently going to be a sophomore

ok i lied he told me he gets about 27000 per year and about 13000 in loans per year ? im not sure if that together is his yearly cost… … another question… are loans stupid to get?

Yes, $13k in loans per year is stupid to get. But an amazing number of kids up to their ears in debt report they are getting great aid!

If i do end up getting loans… what amount should i stop ? i really want to go to this school beause the business school is so good …i was really hoping to get enough FA but i doubt it now

ouch that really deters me from putting NYU on my list.

If you don’t feel like loaning or paying at MINIMUM $26,000 a year (unless you are among the top let’s say .02% of applicants, don’t apply. I applied just for the heck of it and that was a waste of time.

A total of no more than $30,000 in loans for an undergraduate degree is reasonable. More than that could lead to problems for you. Also redroses is correct. Harvard does not offer any merit aid.

so, he is paying around 30K/yr out of the pocket and in addition, is taking on a 13K/yr loan! Even if the loan is subsidized, he will have about 60k to repay one year after he graduate. That is about $800 per month regardless if he has a job or not. Had the loan is not subsidized, it is 8% interest rate and start repayment on day one.

NYU for all intensive purpose, costs around 60k+/year, giving the spending pattern in Manhattan. It has 6,000 wealthy jews attending, the largest concentration of jews in the USA other than Yashiva. They do not care what the cost is, they want be in Sterns.

…I took out $27,000 in loans for this year.

Edit: And it was only because I had some money saved for years that I was able to take that loan. If I didnt, it would have been $37,000.

Alot of people in the topic are not even NYU students and just bashing to schools FA (probably because THEY didnt in - jealous?). Anyways, OP, there are some students who get really good FA and there are students that get no assistance. Keep in mind, NYU accepts less than 30% of applications so they have the right to be picky and stingy with their FA if they want. NYU is also a private school, competing with other private and ivys… so it is expected that tuition would be increased over your average state school. I have a GREAT FA package… similar to the OP and I also have a Federal Work Study that pays part of my tuition (grad student). OP, nobody can tell you what your FA package will look like… you just have to apply and see how your luck is. In relation to your question about freshman stats… you need to search the CC forums… this question gets asked OVER AND OVER AND OVER and people continue to post their stats OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER lol Just use the search key and type in SAT Stern and a million stats will pop up. Be proactive and search it out.

NYU Stern
Median SAT(Math and Reading): 1450
Top 10% of high school class: 88%
Median ACT: 32

Acceptance rate: around 14-15% from posts I’ve seen

Thanks guys… now that i kinda thought it over … itll probably be easier for me to stay in cali schools because they are alot cheaper…im still going to apply because i really want to go to the school only if i can get a good FA package… jw …Does anyone know if USC’s FA is as bad as NYU or is it better?

Hi, Ng,

I am fairly sure USC offers better FA than NYU (not hard to do given how notoriously bad NYU’s FA is). They have some well known scholarships like the Trustee’s, Dean’s Scholarships. Also, if you select USC as your first choice and you are a National Merit Finalist, there is very generous aid (can’t remember exactly, something like 1/2 to full tuition covered?). I believe their aid based on need (the EFC that is derived from the FAFSA application) is also stronger.

Of course, I recommend you to post on the USC forum because there are some very knowledgeable people there.

Thanks very much =]

Ng, you should also look at UVa if you’re looking at top business schools. UVa is one of the more generous public schools with need based aid, and if you’re an especially competitive applicant you’ll likely receive at least some form of merit aid as well. However, out-of-state UVa is significantly harder to get into, and you won’t be guaranteed to get into the business school (you’ll apply during sophomore year) but it’s still something to look in to.

Artloversplus:

Of course NYU has 6,000 WEALTHY Jews–all of whom study in Stern–who obvioulsy don’t care about NYU’s cost.

Antisemitic much?
