Questions on scholarships and financial aid

From the financial aid offer that they give you, where does outside scholarship money go to? Does it cover loans and work study?

Right now, I think I actually have more scholarships than what it will cost me for my freshman year. Can I use that extra money for anything else? There was a page that said that scholarship money could be applied to getting other school supplies, like laptops, but I'm not sure what the policy is with that, and how to do it. Also, would the extra money mean that they will take some money out of my grants/scholarships (the one that Berkeley gave me)?

You need to contact the FA office at Cal and ask. Only they know how your various scholarships will be applied.

It will cover your loans and work study. I think it covers work study first.

It covers your loans/workstudy and then they use your outside scholarships to replace any grants you received. If you have any left over after that, then you get credited with that money via EFT/check. This can be used for whatever - books, transportation, food, etc. Whatever scholarship is NOT used for books/tuition/fees is taxed.

When I asked this question, the rep answered (somewhere along the line of): Cal will cut down on the work-study and loans…then the grants etc.
