Questions regarding sports, clubs, social life

So I was admitted into the honors program here, and I will most likely end up at the honors dorms. How do honors students fit in with everyone else? Will I have trouble fitting in with non honors students (I'm generally a people's person) if I don't take the extra effort to try to meet them? Is it really that troublesome to go to parties and such (since the dorms are so far away)? I know college is about learning, but I really look forward to partying a lot, and am considering dorming with regular students.

Also as for sports, is there any types of teams under club? I'm not too bad of an athlete and am good at sports, but no where near even the club level. I'm talking basketball, soccer and baseball. So what's the sports scene like under the club level?

Sorry, missed this one somehow.

As far as the honors program goes, it’s not like everyone is just a shut in who studies all the time. In fact, I’d say most of them came to UConn because they want a decent education but they still want the type of college life that you described. There are parties that go on in Buckley every weekend (mostly Friday and Saturday nights). They aren’t the ragers/raves that got UConn it’s party reputation 10 years ago or so, but there’s quite a bit of drinking/doing stupid things. It’s looked down on if you want to do it on the weekdays (like the people in the room next to me…) because people take their classes seriously, so you can imagine how loud music at 3am when they have an exam at 8am would be a problem. Basically, don’t worry about living with a bunch of nerds. The people who like to party have the easiest time meeting each other, and as long as you aren’t a blatant jerk about things if people ask you to quiet down, you won’t have any problems.

I’ll take a bit of liberty and say that the Honors Program won’t let you dorm outside of Buckley for freshman year. After that it’s your choice, but they’re kind of strict about the first year stuff. It’s a pain in the ass because they kind of coddle you, but most of the time you can just blow them off.

There are intramural leagues for soccer/basketball. Basically you swipe into the gym with your card and there are sign up lists/boards for various teams/“free agents”. I don’t know much about it, but it’s pretty active and fun from what my friends on the running club have told me.

Thanks a lot dude! It’s nice to hear that honors students know how to have fun too! But is it hard to attend parties outside of honors students? And is the fact that the dorms are so far away make it hard to get involved in most events and normal social life at UConn?

I know people who did fraternity pledges last semester. I didn’t see them around the floor often, but they’re still living so I’m guessing it wasn’t that bad. The location makes things kind of an inconvenience, but they’re not impossible. I think what generally happens is that people makes friends in Buckley, and it’s easier just to hang out with them than trek across campus. Basically you just need an incentive to get out there. So if you really enjoy intramurals, you’ll make time to get to them. If you pledge and want to keep up with it, that’ll definitely be motivation to get out of Buckley. You’ll probably curse out the location a few times, but just try and build your schedule so that you don’t have to make the walk more than 2 times a day and you should be fine.

Sounds good to me! Honestly, I wouldn’t mind just making friends and doing stuff in Buckley. But every now and then I would wanna hit up that huge party across campus. And I’ll try my best to keep the long walks to classes down :p.
