I couldn't AP out of Bio and Chem because my HS didn't offer the classes. I'm gonna be taking Gen Bio and Chem but I don't think I want to take them both in my first semester. Would it be better to take Bio or Chem in the fall?

Since no one has answered you, my advice is: take the one you like better.

What do you want to major in?

my advice would be to take bio 1 and 2 freshmen year. Take gen chem in the summer at rutgers newark(easier compared to new brunswick, my friend took it there and said he got an A while barely trying). After this you can take orgo in sophmore year if you have to.

What is your major and what math course have you been placed in?

I’m probably gonna major in biology or some science but I’m thinking about economics too. Regardless I’m gonna be following a pre med track hence the science classes. I have a placement of pre calculus unfortunately.

Most student take bio and chem together but let it be know that half of those students are pre-med and most get C’s because they take precalc and expos with those courses. I would recommend you take bio by itself and then take gen chem in the summer at rutgers newark, it is way easier. Then you can take orgo in fall soph year

I took bio and chem together and it was a heavy courseload. I was kind of jealous of people who took them separately. But it’s not that bad as long as you stay on top of your work. I managed to do well taking them along with other hard classes like expos and so do other people. It’s up to you and what you think you can handle.

Thanks for the input. Sj0593, if you had taken them separately, which one would you take first?

Supposedly there’s a more generous curve for chem outside of the fall semester, since pharmacy students all take it in the fall. At the same time, Chem and Expos might be easier to manage than Bio and Expos. I’m not sure if I have a personal preference, as long as they were separated.

Since you are a possible biology major, it would be best to take gen bio and see if you actually like it. Generally, this is what the professors and upperclassmen recommend. You won’t fall behind even if you take gen chem later on. Both of the classes are difficult since they’re entry level courses that partially serve to weed out students.
