Quick housing question

I called USC housing this morning. They were very friendly and helpful. The one insight I gained was Birkrant will be used for only freshman this year. I am not sure if that was the case in the past. From what I could gather, their intention is to use Birkrant for scholarship recipients this year, however, much depends on how many actually enroll as well as what their housing preferences are (and when they submitted it). They do not start looking at assigning housing until May, so I don’t think they will know until then if Birkrant will be available to other interested students.

Yes, perhaps they expect a large number of scholarships recipients to enroll, and if that number is not met, maybe Birnkrant will be reopened to the general student body.

Just looking at the numbers, there are 507 spots in Birkrant (well a few less depending on number of RA’s). Anyone know how many trustee/pres recipients matriculate on avg? Also, some of them might choose an alternative dorm. Just a guess, as I am far from an knowledgable on this, but it would seem there is a good chance for others that want Birkrant if they got their housing deposit in quickly.

There aren’t 507 spaces, more like 250. The website lists spaces not rooms.

trojan, thanks for the clarification.

I believe there are 300+ Presidentials. When my S went for the interview, there are about 130 kids attended and there are three of this events. For Trustee, I think I heard from somewhere about 200+. If total 500 of Presi+Trustee with 50% (maybe a little bit high) matriculate rate is about 250. So, there should be some spaces left!

It was always freshman-only, with the exception of RAs.

This still baffles me. Birnkrant is a large dorm – I think as big as Marks, at least.

Zelda, the reason I thought Birkrant housed other grades was on another thread someone indicated singles at Birkrant were usually taken by upperclassmen. Maybe that is not the case though. This is all new to us.

That’s because RAs are placed in single-student rooms and are ALWAYS upperclassmen ;)

I thought all the single rooms are on the top floor- so all they can’t be for the RAs- right?

I’m presidential and I’d like to have a mix of students in Birnkrant! And anyway, a few scholarship recipients I’ve talked to are going to New/North and such.

So a few questions regarding a student not eligible for Birnkrant who is looking for a traditional freshman dorm setting. As commented about in previous threads are New and North still notorious for too much partying (hard to study in room-drunks in hallway)? Are Marks Hall and Trojan Hall still old and dirty? How is Marks Tower (Great Outdoors special interest floor)? Son heard Fluor Tower is a good compromise even though it is suite style and costs more. How much room in Fluor Tower is dedicated to their special interest floors (Latino and Somerville)? Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer insight!

You probably won’t be able to get Fluor because it’s so popular, and because most of the freshman athletes live there. New/North, Pardee, Marks Tower/Hall, and Trojan are the stereotypical college dorms. New/North is known for its hordes of silly freshmen and puke in the hallways, stairwells, on the ceiling even. All the others are pretty much the same. They’re all “old and dirty” by conventional standards, but they are livable and the common areas and bathrooms do get remodeled and fixed up every couple years. When I was in Pardee my freshman year they redid the bathrooms over winter break. I know Trojan got new stuff in last year.

He should apply NOW (it may be too late) and list Fluor as his first choice, then. I think I only got it because I mailed my housing form (it wasn’t online in 2006) the day I got into USC.

The special interest floors only get one floor in the building. I’ve talked about Fluor extensively in this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/671723-guide-housing-usc.html

I talked to a admissions officer today in person and Birnkrant is definitely mostly Trustee/Presidential but he said that T.O. kids could also potentially room there so fingers crossed I get into TO lol

If i submitted the application mar. 28th, do you think i have a good chance for /any/ room in birnkrant (probably not a triple…but a double?) or fluor?

Same, I applied for housing on 3/29…what’s the chances of me getting fluor if I listed it as my first choice?

I’m a Presidential scholar, but Birnkrant isn’t my first choice. I’m more interested in North/New. As nice as it would seem, it seems weirdly pretentious for all of us to live in one building together… seems a little…cultish

:)

any idea on the housing chances given the dates above?

Also, in birnkrant, should i put the university residential college as a special interest housing preference?
