I will be attending an LEP program as a freshman next fall. Can a double major in another LEP, more specifically journalism? If so, how do I go about doing that?

Hello boondocks 46 Quick Question: Are you in enrolled in Journalism LEP program or another LEP program at UMD?

If you are not enrolled in the Journalism LEP program and if you want to double major in another LEP at the University of Maryland, in your case, journalism, then you will need to take the required courses for the journalism program. When you complete the courses, you can transfer internally to the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism. You can only apply once.

I suggest that you look at the handbook for the journalism program at UMD:

http://www.merrill.umd.edu/jourdocs/handbook.pdf

Also, since you are entering UMD for the fall 2012 semester, the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism change some of their requirements. This also include the general education requirements. Please visit the following website:

[Incoming Student Degree Requirements (Starting Fall 2012) | Philip Merrill College of Journalism](http://merrill.umd.edu/undergraduate/incoming-student-degree-requirements)

According to other users on College Confidential, the process is clear-cut for journalism. Pass and do well in all of the required courses and get a 2.8 GPA or above and you are in the journalism program. However, you must maintain a 2.00 GPA or higher to remain in the journalism program because if you don’t, the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism will dismissed you and you will not be admitted back to the college and you have to choose an alternative major.

I also suggest that you contact the following people listed below:

General Undergraduate Admissions Information: Contact Jesse Bowen, Limited Enrollment Programs Coordinator at 301.314.8385

Transfer Admissions Information: Contact Assistant Director of Undergraduate Student Services Josh Madden at jmadden@jmail.umd.edu.

Mr. Madden and Mr. Bowen can tell you how you can get into the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism as an internal transfer.

I hope this helps. Thank you for your post.
