Quick question - can I say...

... "I won the first place in a competition"?
Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question... is it correct/common to say "first place"?
Thanks for any help!

(also: what if two people won the "first place"? How do I say that?
Thanks!)

"I won first place in a competition." Or "I placed first in a competition."

"I tied for first place in a competition."

Thank you so much! :)

leave out the "tied for first"...you dont need pple to know that 2 ppl won, you just need them to know YOU won the first place =)

what kind of competition? did u get a medal or sth? at what level was the competition conducted? was it the best results achieved in that particular field for your team/school in recent years?

i would suggest sth like "through unwavering perseverence and steely determination, I clinched the gold medal/first place in the prestigious nationals/district basketball/debating/astronomical competitions, the best results achieved by my school/team in recent years".....a plain i won first is like errrr

Umm, thanks lOngbOWmeN! Haha, I loved your "a plain i won first is like errrr"!

It was a Math competition in my state offering scholarships for high school at one of the best (and most expensive) schools in my country... in fact, I won second place, but our grades (mine and the 1st) were so close that the school said we tied and gave full tuition for both of us.

(pheeew I was so lucky... without the full-tuition, I doubt I could attend a good school... actually any school... oh my)

(unfortunately I can't say the "best results achieved by my school/team in recent years" part, but I simply loved it!!)

you just need them to know YOU won the first place =)

um, I won the second... but they treated me like the first... Is it fair to say that I won the first place?

Nah, you know what? The 1st place isn't even applying, and I'm not lying! I'll put "1st place"!

Isn't it too pretentious? Can I really say things like that? :o (yes, I'm blushing)

I thought the unwavering perseverance bit was a joke? :)

Just mention that you won (or tied for) first place, and remember to give a little explanation of the scholarship in a way that stresses its significance (in case they are not familiar with it).

Don't be verbose in your application at all. Simply write that "I placed first in XYZ competition". Dont make a simple description sound like an insufferable snippet from a college essay.

I beat out all of the competition, if that's grammatically correct.

Thanks everybody! Yeah, I don't like to be verbose... You're definitely right...
