I got my scores from May 1 today. I received a 700 on chemistry. I barely studied or anything, I just used my knowledge from the AP exam studying that I did. Anyway, is a 700 good enough to not have to retake it?

From what I understand, 700+ is fine for most things. Of course, >700 is always better. At least I'm in the "highest bracket"...unless that bracket is 750+?

For most schools, I would say a 700 is beyond satisfactory, assuming that you are not majoring in chemistry. Unfortunately, 750+ is the norm for (unhooked) Princeton admits, judging by the 2014 results thread. Keep in mind, too, that a 700 in Chemistry translates to a lower percentile than a 700 on other subject tests.
To put things in perspective, I had scores of 800, 790, 780, and 750 on World, Chemistry, Math II, and Lit when I applied to Princeton and chose to submit all scores. Almost all of my classmates who applied had better scores than I did.
Thus, while a 700 will not disqualify your application, it will not distinguish you in an applicant pool of such high caliber.

For a school with less than a 10% admissions rate, you will need to distinguish yourself, particularly if you intend to be considered based upon your academics. A 700 is a fine score. It will not distinguish you in the Princeton application pool. An opportunity missed.

A 700 is not that great. I suggest retaking it.

I’d retake anything under a 750 one more time. I retook a 780 Math L2 because I knew I could easily get an 800 with a new TI-89 (I used some crappy calculator that day because that was all I had). There will be many, many kids who are applying with 800s in at least two SAT subject tests. And IMO, SAT subject tests are more important for admissions than the SAT reasoning test at Princeton.

Yeah, 700 is a little pedestrian. If it doesn’t cost you anything, it wouldn’t do you any harm to retake it.

I really sucked on my Subject Tests. Got a 750 and two 680s. Didn’t prepare for any of them, and after that I felt some regret because those test scores were a gap in my application.

While we’re on that note, the Lit subject test is ridiculous. Testing students on their ability to understand writing without asking them to write is a terrible idea.
