Hey! I'm planning on applying to Wesleyan Early Decision, but I'm debating whether or not to retake the SAT. My scores are V:730, Wr:690 (11/12 essay), and...M:610. I'm just god awful at math, and was happy to get the 610, but I've been wondering whether I should try to push for a bit higher. My reluctance lies in the fear that I might do worse, rather than better. For SAT II reference, if it makes a difference, I got a 790 on Lit and a 740 on USH.

I think that if you have the time and the results will get there in time before the ED application deadline you should try again. The school will take your best individual results from the two tests. Your math results places you in the bottom 25% of accepted student math results. So even with the strong ED acceptance rate last year you will enhance your chances with a higher math score. Your verbal and writing are in line with mid 50% of accepted students. This won't necessarily keep you from getting accepted but every little bit helps you compete against a huge number of qualified applicants. Good luck!

There's no real downside to retaking the SAT, other than the studying you'll need to do to try to boost the math score. It seems worth a try in your case. But make sure to keep your focus on making your overall application speak to the admissions folk. At Wes, as at most top schools, the total picture you present will matter more than any one number.

Surely, Wesleyan doesn't focus just on SAT scores, but you might as well take the SAT again for the sake of security. It's plain and simple. You might want to study as much as you can now with both practice tests and guides covering the topics. If you have any questions regarding topics, ask me. :-). I did really well on both the Math section and on the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test. :-).

You could send your current scores to Wesleyan now (and to any other schools you are considering) and then sign up for the October test. If your Oct. scores go up, then resend them. If the scores stay the same or the math drops, no one knows you even took them. This will cost you a few extra dollars, but it may take some of the pressure off.

I am not sure you're correct. I believe that once you have an account with College Board to send your scores to certain schools all of the scores will be sent out. I may be wrong but perhaps someone with definitive information will help here.

danalynne, I agree with you. ash, retake the SAT in October and send your scores to Wes as soon as they come out. All of your scores will be sent, including your SAT Subject Test scores.

Danalynne,
Yes..you can not pick and choose SAT scores the same way you can with the ACT. But the college board will not send anything unless you pay them to do it. If you pay to send all of your scores in August and then take the October test, your October results will not be sent unless you pay to have them sent.
You can only do this the fall of your senior year, when you are deciding whether to take the SAT one more time. For students who stress out during testing,, this little trick frequently takes the pressure off and results in big increases.
