on this essay:

What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised or unsettled or challenged you, and in what way?

Would choosing a song that motivated me to do things throughout my highschool career be answering the question?

In essence, I’m asking if a work of motivation is acceptable to write about. In the prompt it says a work that has “surprised, unsettled, or challenged.” So I’m not sure if it would fit in.

You’re right about your gut on this one I think. Not acceptable unless you can link the motivational song into surprising/unsettling/challenging the way you were before the song. It’s clear from the prompt “surprised/unsettled/challenged” that they are looking for something that stirred/changed you. I looked at the prompts my son did for U Virginia (he applied early and is waiting to hear Jan 31) and he did not do this one.
