Does anyone know if there is any quiet room or isolated place to study? I have been studying at pattee and paterno but it can get noisy there with people talking/telephones, etc...

i rememeber at my tour they said the there was some room upstairs that was really quiet

The stacks in Pattee (maybe in Paterno too, not sure if it has them) are probably your best bet. During most of the semester, the rooms used for music/multi-media, etc. have study desks and are usually quiet. It's towards the end of the semester--when people are "studying" for finals--that the annoying people come to talk on cell phones. They have signs up stating that this is a "No Cell Phone Zone", but they only help to a point. Hopefully someone on here knows of a really secret spot. :)

In all honesty, though, the stacks are usually very quiet, even during the pre-finals period (at least they were last year).

You mean the stacks right next to the window facing forum and the museum?
I have been there and it is somewhat quiet, but I have found that there are people talking on cell phones and to their friends throughout the library. Even at those individual desks, sometimes two people get together and start have a conversation or to discuss something. To me the worst areas are the computer labs, as people do not hesitate to answer the phones or have a regular conversation as if they were walking on the street.

I was hoping someonw knew a very isolated reading room or hidden desk in a basement somewhere : ). Maybe there are other libraries scatted around that have small rooms--does anyone know?

Setz, what is your year and major at PSU?

frasi, I'm a meteorology and math major, year 2010.

How was your first year at psu? Are you in any clubs, how was your gpa?

you could always try the architecture/landscape architecture library in the stuckeman building. i'm not an arch major, but everytime i've been in that library it's been incredibly quiet. i think that they have a little conference room attached to it that you can shut the door to and study in by yourself if the library itself isn't quiet enough. plus it's in a really pretty setting with so many windows and trees outside.

They allow you to close the door of the conference room--what if someone enters?

3rd floor Pattee will always be your best bet frasi. Its always quiet there - not many people go there to study. During finals week it can get a bit crowded there but its quiet nonetheless. You can always try the stacks, but personally I find the place cramped and suffocating.

My first year went pretty well. I loved the school and can't wait to return in ~1.5 months. My GPA was in the 3.84+ range. Phys 212H was a ***** of a class and screwed up my GPA, but everything else was great. I enjoyed Engl 30, first year seminar, Math 230H, Phys 211H and Meteo 201 in the fall and Econ 002 w/ Schlow (I hope he's doing better -- had some sort of illness and had to leave in April), Math 251 with Skukalek -- top-notch teacher, Meteo 300, and Comp Sci 201C (though I wasn't that fond of the instructor, I learned a lot from the book and he was helpful still) in the spring. I'm in the Campus Weather Service, Penn State Branch of the American Meteorological Society, and math club. This coming year I want to join some service-oriented clubs / groups with friends.

Stz, maybe you can give me a few tips about phys 211h. I still have no idea how it screwed up you gpa being that you kept it above 3.8--Did you get an A-?

I am a huge nerd and I had a 4.00 from the first semester. Then Phys 212H hit and I luckily got a B+, which brought me down to a 3.84 for the spring semester. I know that might sound anal, but it's me. GPA is very important for meteo and College of EMS scholarships, so I try my best to keep it up.
