Quit a four-year university, started at a CCC then transfer to UC

Hi, everyone. Now I am really in a quite confused situation. I once studied in a university in Hong Kong for one year, due to some reasons, I dropped out of that university and started anew at a California community college. When applying to transfer to UC, it is required that I should upload my GPA and coursework in my previous four-year university. Because I took 33 semester credits in that previous university( I am not sure if these 33 credits are UC transferable or not), and my GPA is only 3.3(my GPA at CCC is 4.0), so I wonder that will my credits exceed the credit limit allowed by UC? Also will the GPA attained at my previous university badly affect my transfer application result? Thanks for all of you if you can give me some advice!

Grades in transferable courses would count.

Lower division (frosh/soph level) courses from non UC schools are capped at 70 semester units to transfer to UC. Upper division and UC courses are then added to determine transfer units and whether you “have too many units”.

Hi, really thank you for replying my post. I am sure that some of my 33 credits taken at my previous university cannot be transferred since they are GE class exclusively offered at that university. But some of the GE classes, for example, introduction to Psychology, may be transferable. In that case, I am wondering how will they calculate my GPA? Because I took Introduction to Psychology at my previous university and got A-, then after going to study in CCC, for the similar class, I got A. Will they take the average of A- and A? Or will they just replace A with A-?
Thanks a lot for your help!

UC’s do not average grades. If the UC’s deem the original Psych class as UC transferable, then the original grade only will be considered and that credit will be transferable. If both courses are deemed similar but not the same, then both grades and credits may be considered for your GPA.

Thanks for your reply! Another thing I am concerned is that, for example, if I took a three-credit Introduction to Psychology course at the previous university, which is UC transferable. And then I took the similar three-credit Introduction to Psychology course at a CCC. Then what’s the credits that can be transferred to UC? Three credits or six credits?
Thanks for your help!

It will be up to the UC’s to determine what will transfer and what credits you will get. I would count on at least 3 credits/units from the CC class but until the UC’s evaluate your 4 year university courses, I could cannot comment if they will give you credit for the other Psych class. Assume 3 credits at this point if you are trying to reach the 60 semester/90 quarter unit minimum for transfer.

Thank you so much for your help!

Also, I heard that some UCs, such as UCB doesn’t weigh much on your previous coursework taken at that four-year university, while some UCs, such as UCI, weighing pretty much on your GPA attained at the previous four-year university. Is that true? ?

If you took courses that are duplicates of each other then you only get credit once. For repeated courses, UC only allows repeating and grade replacement if the previous grade was C- or lower, but do not exactly say what they do if you do repeat a course with a C or higher grade (probably means that they will take the first C or higher grade, but ask to verify).

Note that a course may be UC transferable but not a direct equivalent to a course offered by the UC campus(es) you are applying to. Such a course could possibly be used to fulfill less specific requirements that describe it (e.g. “an arts or literature course”, “a social science course”), or could be transferred as non-specific credit.

Thanks for your information!

All UC’s review transfer applications the same but each UC may have different major requirements needed for transfer.

Ok, got it. Really thanks for your help and information!
