My D has been swimming competitively for 7 years, but quit in her sophomore year of HS. She placed at schools Nationals in England, but felt totally burnt out and didn't want to continue. She is still involved with her club, but changed her focus: now she is volunteering as swim coach assistant during kids lessons and enjoying it very much. But I'm wondering if her quitting mid-way through HS would be viewed as a negative by admission committees? Also, where in application is it possible to indicate multiple years of one activity beyond just last 4 years of High School? It seems that colleges are only interested in High School EC's, which is not really fair for kids who put in years of hard work and dedication in a sport or other activity. Thanks for any advice!

I’ve only worked on 4 apps so far, but on most of them you describe your role in the EC and state the years in which you did it. So, for ballet, for example, my first year was when I was four, so I put “1996-Present.” And for piano, I put “1998-Present.” There isn’t very much room in the description of role area, so she’ll want to just put HS activities and big awards in there. Since she’s still involved in swimming, albeit in a very different way, she might want to expand on it in an essay. Many apps have an essay about the EC most important to the student.

Oh and maybe she “switched” to volunteer coaching and didn’t “quit.” Maybe? I know it’s semantics, but one sounds a lot better.
