Hello

My high school is the only high school in my district not to have a Quiz Bowl team and I am currently in the process of making one.

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions ? Or about your experiences?
thanks

It's known by so many names--I'm guessing quiz bowl is the same as scholastic bowl?

SB is so fun, although with me only in small doses. From an administrative standpoint, it's really cheap (all you need is a game system), although we have the benefit of having a coach who also can drive a bus. It's not really anything that requires much work on the students behalf, unless you really want to study hard. We never did, and we've won conference and regionals a few times in the last couple years. Conference and regionals probably don't mean much on CC, though. :p We play some pretty competitive Chicago suburban schools too.

I don't think it's much of an activity to make your "sole" pursuit, not like debate or drama could be. But it's pretty awesome when, you know, your team is pretty good.

Oh man. We know ours as Academic Team

And we rock! It's a complete blast at competitions, especially if you have a great team that you know you can count on. What's hard is trying not to tread on anyone's toes or not putting anyone in for extended amounts of time, so my team came up with a bottom line: If you know it, you're in. If you don't, sit out.

Thanks for the reply

Can you guys tell me how you practice for it, if you practice for it?

We call it Knowledge Bowl where I'm from. I've been in it since 5th grade, but I just joined a couple days ago and the season is already half over. (The coach is my Calc 2 teacher this semester, so hopefully it'll help, haha).

I don't take it seriously at all though. I just signed up because I figure it's my senior year and I've done it since 5th grade I might as well finish it off. I'm just gonna joke around and make fun of all the nerdy kids at the meets, lol. There are 4 of us un-nerdy people, so it should be ok, haha.

We HAD a Quiz Bowl team, but we didn't have enough support for it and it broke apart. I'm going to ask last year's supervior if there could be quiz bowl next year. :]

For practise, we basically just play a bunch of rounds with sets of 20 questions each. Our coach has a seeping pile of old questions from years upon tournaments before. We practice from about 2.45 to 4.30. Kids can take on responsibility and study outside if they want. Really good things to know are: Shakespeare, world capitols, presidents, authors of books, and the presidential cabinet. Senators too, although that's kinda tough.

We don't practice.

We're all just nerds, so we know random stuff.

the really good schools (generally magnet and private) treat it as a sport.
at my school, its just for fun and we do pretty well.

I love Quiz Bowl. Over the years I've amassed such a large amount of random information and useless facts that aren't applied in school, and I can put them to use and do really well at competitions. Plus I feel very satisfied when I get an answer right, so it's also an ego trip.

I'm on the middle school quiz bowl team and I love it. :)

It's really easy--all you need is a group of really smart people--there's not much of a commitment except actually going to tournaments. Our school has a couple really knowledgeable people around, so we put together a team (we don't have t-shirts, equipment, practice books, a real coach, or "squad meetings") but we have managed to beat the best local team (repeat national qualifiers and state champions) several times. That's the great thing about Quiz Bowl. There are almost no barriers to entry--just get registered for a local tournament and pay the fees on the day of.

how much do average tourneys cost?

the costs are based on registered teams. teams are usually 4 people each and the most cost is approx $40 per team (i think).

if you worry about funds:
1. see if you can get sponsorship from organizations like PTSA or Academic/Athletic boosters. we get some of our funds from them at my school
2. charge dues--> $5 per month per person would be enough to cover one tournament a month at least

misc items like team t-shirts would be extra if you choose

Taggart--
Does your team do NJ Challenge?
