My RA told my friend that he’s tired of smelling weed everyday in the halls (I do not live near him enough for him to smell) the weed. I do not smoke on a regular basis and when I do (2-3 times a week), I make ABSOLUTE sure that I minimize the smell to the fullest. I have a smoke buddy, 6 cans of ozium, air freshener outside our room (my residence is a suite so that means there’s a common area within our living quarter. So the smell would basically go through two rooms until it reaches the main hallway.) Unfortunately, he thinks I am the only one in the entire floor smoking and I do not want that. He said he’s going to start taking action and I am nervous because I do not want the police knocking on my door every time my RA smells weed. Also, he told my friend that he hated me and wanted to kill me at times. EVERY guy on my floor hates our RA because he’s a jerk. Anyways I read up on the University’s policy on room searches. I found this : Personnel authorized by the University may enter assigned residence hall space for inventory, inspection, maintenance, when a threat exists to students and/or property or when reasonable belief exists that the assigned space is being used for illegal purposes. Only duly authorized law enforcement authorities, following appropriate legal procedure, are entitled to enter and search rooms and residents’ belongings. Can anyone interpret this into English please? The smell comes from this other girl who smokes near his room, but I don’t want to call her out because I don’t want her to get in trouble. Any help please I hate that I am in this situation. Currently, I do not plan on smoking for a couple weeks because of this predicament.
I do not smoke on a regular basis and when I do (2-3 times a week),
I think most people would consider that a regular basis, so regular that you might be nose blind to it. It’s a really putrid smell to those who don’t partake. About the only thing that’s worse is that patrouli oil that people try to mask it with, IMHO.
It seems like it might be a good idea to tell the chick who lives near the RA that you’re getting blamed for her smoking. Maybe share your odor control strategies.
Umm…2-3 times a week is definitely “regular user”.
My interpretation of the policy is that the University personnel can access your room to do maintenance/building inspection, or if they suspect that there is an urgent safety issue, but will not search your room for contraband. It appears that they will have law enforcement officers deal with busting you/looking for drugs.
I agree with your plan of action. Stop smoking for the next few weeks. If possible. stop smoking in the dorms entirely. I am confident the university has a policy against using marijuana in the dorm - if you want to live there, you should abide by the rules.
stop smoking in your dorm… duh
Two methods:
- Stop smoking... forever.
- If you cannot stop smoking, do not smoke inside your dorm. It is probably against the rules to smoke anything inside a dorm or other building.
OP just joined CC to post this…? We aren’t allowed to use certain words, but I find this post suspicious.
Are there any states out there that allow smoking of any kind in the dorms? Even in Colorado where pot is legal you can’t smoke in the dorms because they are public buildings.
Stop smoking. Your RA is doing his job.
I also find it…unusual. Agree, most colleges don’t allow any kind of smoking in dorms. Get wise.
Since OP also posted this under U South FL, here’s what they say: “Smoking is not permitted on the USF Tampa campus except in those areas marked as designated smoking areas.”
Dude, then put away the bud and stop smoking. Unless you plan on scapegoating all of your friends if (when) you get arrested, stop getting high. Do you honestly think a judge will go easy on you just because everyone else is doing this but you got caught? Come on man. That’s an elementary problem.
Note that even UNC, in a state where tobacco is a major industry, has a smoke free campus.
Your RA is putting you on notice that if he smells the weed again, he is going to call campus security.
Marijuana smoking is against the law/dorm rules and his job is to enforce those rules. He is nice in that he is giving you a warning.
