I am on city-data and am reading these sad stories about how the people are in a way a bit racist to black people in OC, kinda saddens me, this still exists?

will i have to undergo this possibly even though i am light skinned?

and I like white people too, i dont want to have my opinion changed from anger, frustration and humiliation.

any info? because i am applying to Irvine this year too, i guess ill just have to do a tour of the city a few times.

Racism exists in every city, to varying degrees. Perhaps the case in parts of the OC has to do with the fact that many of the residents of its wealthier areas are white/asian, and they see blacks as lowly people, maybe.

I wouldn’t really worry about it, though; the only time I’d think it might be called into question – i.e., the matter of safety for minorities – would be some place like the deep South … but then I’m just stereotyping.

irvine is a modern, civilized suburb…not a trashy hick town like fresno or riverside or something. i highly doubt that racism in irvine is significant enough for it to be a factor in your transfer decisions.

i have lived in irvine for a bit and truthfully, there aren’t a lot of black people in irvine. Irvine is overwhelmingly White and Asian. but still, you will be attending a public university in California…one of the least likely places in the US to encounter racism. visit the campus yourself and see if you like it, but don’t let Internet ramblings influence where you go to college.

LOL, as an LA native, Irvine, the city, sucks (i’m sure the university is fine) I’ve only been to Irvine twice in my life, and each time, i was complaining about how god-awful boring it is, and how there’s nothing to do out there. The sentiment was best captured by my friend who said “places like this are the reason that kids do drugs.”

Irvine stinks of the ‘tea party’ feeling. It may not be Riverside or Fresno, but it’s barely a step above them imo.

Heh heh, that’s generally the consensus among people who visit Irvine for the first time. when i first went there I was bewildered at how “sterile” the city is…it’s beige house after beige house with an occasional Ralphs strip mall. i have heard of people getting huge fines for painting their houses the wrong shade of beige. but i suppose it’s a nice place to raise a family…plus the city has some nice nature reserves and natural running trails and stuff. and the suburban white girls aren’t too bad either, lol…

but im not interested to do anything except buy clothes & make money and sit on the computer when im not doing my profession (when i get their of course)

im dragging my girlfriend with me, and told her it might could turn into home for us. i like safe, calmness. im not into the clubbing scene or partying, thus why im not choosing SB or SC.

ps3 keeps me occupied and collegeconfidential/youtube/9to5mac, etc is what keeps me entertained.

i understand the concept behind irvine and don’t think it’s wrong. their are a million other cities, if one doesn’t like the atmosphere, their are alternatives, riverside, UCLA.

but @briceies, of course racism exists everywhere, but i am hearing its blantantly public in parts of OC, specifically newport beach. had I not researched this OC area, i would have went their and experienced this humiliation (i would go their because the name sounds nice “beach”), this black guy did on city-data.com. He said he was in a bar and some white males were playing pool and talking about how they like calling black people the N word and one of em was daring the other to do something right then.

i don’t want to be amidst some stuff like that, like i said i like white people & im not even ghetto or anything, i dont speak in ebonics. i listen to rap and stuff, but im not baggin pants, du rag, etc stereotypical stuff.

well, I wouldn’t base a city’s level of racism off of a story off the internet! And even if the story is 100% true, that’s like saying everyone in Iran is a terrorist, just because a small group of radicals hold certain beliefs that are viewed by the rest of the world as violent and heinous.

theirs more than one all over city data & obviously theirs some issues with jews at UCI and im jewish.

you’ll probably say why do you want to come here then, i didnt know this until after i wanted to go, & i only knew about the israel thing first, that wouldnt affect me, i dont even wear a kokoschka.

but this black racism thing might be an issue, but im going to take quite a few visits, because i don’t wanna give up, maybe i will appeal, i usually have good re pore with white people, so we’ll see.

■■■■■ well, okay i dont know the torah or anything, i didnt have a barmitzvah, i know its weird im black/japanese & jewish. im from NY and its just whats around and what we affiliated with.

but i do believe israel is the holy land and YHWH won’t forget this black jews. we cant be going through all this on earth for nothing.

the meek shall inherit the earth. i believe the Native American’s still have a major purpose too. blahh what do i know, im listening to music right now about smoking marijuana.

I love the OC beach areas and because I’m Vietnamese, I love grubbing in Santa Ana but I don’t make it a habit to stay there longer than I have to. Some OC people really hate LA and I guess I come off as an LA dude so yea…

Costa Mesa especially seems to hate me. I went out shopping with my latino friend and we got the cold shoulder in many places. But then we went again with her white boyfriend and we were waited on hand and foot. Go figure, haha. Not saying Costa Mesa is all bad but that’s just my experience there.

Haha, not your fault, it doesn’t really bother me. Same thing happens to me in Beverly Hills and I worked there for a year too. Maybe if I dressed better, they’d think I’m some rich tourist or something and give me the red carpet treatment, haha.

This whole thread sounds crazy to me. I half live in Irvine and I’ve never really seen any type of racism there. My best friend who lives here is Persian (and so are a lot of her friends or other similar ethnicity), my SO is Korean, about 1/3 of my friends are Mexican/Spanish, 1/3 Asian, 1/3 white, some black. Then again, most people in Irvine are whitewashed/$$ sooo lol?

I worked for the City of Costa Mesa for 3 years, I’ve lived in the ghetto Buena Park side of Anaheim, lived in Santa Ana, lived next to the Block in Orange, lived in DTF for this past year, spend most of my time in Irvine, I’m in HB or Newport every weekend in the Summer…

… and the only kind of discrimination I’ve ever outright seen was when I watched the Prop 8 polls on the news and realized that Orange County is full of closed-minded ***holes.

@SilentHill
Where were you shopping in CM? Were you at South Coast Plaza lol

I live in southern orange county all my life and I’ve never experience racism in Irvine at all. I live im between Newport beach and laguna beach, so Irvine is nearby. It isn’t a great city to have fun because everything is usually closed by 9. People usually come to Newport beach for the clubs or even as far down to hollywood. You wont find much to do in Irvine because of the noise law and curfew. There are a lot of wealthy families, however. Southern orange county is a great place to raise a family and grow up in, but it definitely gets boring if you don’t have a car to get to places.

Lmao on a side note… I spend a lot of my time in Turtle Ridge in Irvine which is definitely on the nicer side, and someone got shot last week so they closed down the entrance to the community while I was hanging out with some friends inside. We were taking bets on what race the shooter was and we decided it was like 75% chance of them being Asian, 25% Mexican, and my black friend is like “Damn there’s a 0% chance of it being a Black person since I’m here with you guys…”

My apologies if that offends anyone! But really, if there is any racism in Irvine, I doubt it’s at UCI or within our generation.

Haha, yea, you gotta love South Coast Plaza and the surrounding area. The smugness rivals SF

Nevertheless, I can’t hate on Irvine. The spectrum is nice to go to at night but the amphitheater needs some renovation. Plus I took the CHSPE there so Irvine was my favorite place for a while since it got me out of HS at the time.
