I want to hear about racism in specifically top tier boarding if it happens there at all. Also if racism is a big problem in a specific school tell me because I don’t want to attend a racist boarding school since I’m a urm.
I don’t think that any of them are racist. I think that a little bit of self-segregation might be a thing at a couple of them, but I highly doubt that any of them are racist. A lot of these schools have a high percentage of URMs and diversity programs. There is definitely a place for you at a top-tier boarding school. Good luck w/ ur application!
It is highly unlikely that you would experience overt racism, but students who are a minority from specific privileges often have to negotiate that margin on a daily basis. There will be students who can’t relate to your experience or identity and expect you to relate to theirs. Visiting schools is really important so you can get a sense of how the community behaves. Look for students you identify with and ask them about their experience.
I’ve never heard of overt racism. However, there are bound to be issues with micro-aggression type stuff as it is part of the fabric of the American experience, unfortunately.
As @jdewey suggests, ff you could find some students and their parents to talk to of the same race as yours, it might be helpful for gauging the experience from an insider’s point of view.
This question could have been phrased differently to get more feedback.
Yeah I understand what you mean @54321 I mainly really want to now if it’s hard to be in the boarding school environment as a urm.I’m probably over anxious about this…
Yup.
Bump
No need to bump - the above posts pretty much covers it. Now, once you start touring boarding schools and want to ask about specifics, feel free to do so. Or better yet, ask again once you have acceptances in hand. At this point, though, for such a broad-based question, no user is going to tell you anything different than the above, so I’m closing this thread.
