Sorry if this is a touchy subject/question, but my friend's sister went to a college in Tennessee and she commented on how different races generally don't mix, or just don't like each other. I'm from the Midwest, so there really isn't much in the way of racism here, at least not that I've seen...but I know things are different in the South. Is it this was at UGA, or is it really not an issue at all?

Again, I apologize if this is a 'bad' question and is not meant in a rude or offending way...but I'm just curious. Thank you in advance. :)

It's generally not an issue among most students, but of course extremists on both sides like to go over the top every now and then. In the honors dorm where I live there have been no problems at all though if you want to get into the frat scene you'll probably find a few intolerant bigots, but overall it's really not much of an issue. There are a lot of single-color groups that hang out with each other, but by no means do people entirely see members of their own race. Overall it's not that big of a deal and there are plenty of enlightened people to make up for the few bad apples.

I havent seen any racism in athens from the times ive been there and I have visited often. Certainly there will be a few racists everywhere, but Athens and the city of Atlanta are pretty progressive.
