Hi (: Im bi-racial and I've been really excited about applying to UGA... But I've heard that its's really segregated. Not malicious, it just has sort of an undercurrent of racism. I mean I'm still totally going to apply, I just want to know what I'm in for haha.

It’s not the 60’s anymore… It’s the same as the rest of the country. So if you feel alright now where you live, you’ll probably feel alright going to UGA

Are you from GA or the South or are you from the Northeast or West Coast? Your perception may vary depending upon your frame of reference. I wouldn’t describe the culture of GA as overt racism, but the South has a long-standing norm of black and white cultures living parallel lives without frequent intersection. Interracial dating and socializing is fine, but you’ll find that different races tend more often not to pray together nor play together. In our town, there are even certain grocery stores that tend to serve more of one community than the other. That would be different from what you may have seen in other parts of the U.S.

The separation is not necessarily due to disinvitations to participate together, but is continued in part because the past history of enforced segregation required that the African-American community develop its own institutions, many of which are exceptionally strong, vibrant and productive. There’s a significant payoff for affiliation with those organizations, so the decision to intersect less often is sometimes a reasonable choice among a variety of options. And of course you can find pockets of racism as well, though I couldn’t say whether those would be more or less prevalent than in other parts of the country.
